Form of Emotional Response - Assignment Example

Introduction

Disgust relates to a form of emotional response of repulsion towards something that is regarded as offensive or not pleasing according to human imagination. It is a form of sensation that relates to something that is repulsive or distasteful. It is generally experienced in relation to certain senses such as taste which is the primary response and then to other senses such as smell, touch, and sight. Disgust can be broadly divided into two forms namely moral and core disgust.

Moral and core disgust

Moral disgust refers to behaviors that are related to social transgressions. This is in reference to activities that are deemed to be against the expectations of society in general. Some of the activities that are regarded as contributing factors to moral disgust include theft, rape, murder, lying, and gossip among others. This form of disgust leads to the avoidance of any close association with the people who are regarded as violating the set norms and values of society. People who are contributing to moral disgust are subjected to isolation and punishment so that they can correct such behavior (D'Arms & Jacobson, 2014). On the other hand, core disgust is defined as the basic form of disgust that results from sensing what the body believes to be not worth sensing. For example locating a worm in the food, coming across a dirty item at unexpected times. This is believed to rely more on the sensory as well as perceptual processes while moral disgust is believed to depend heavily on the social evaluation activities.

Examples of disgust in my life

There are a number of things that have disgusted me in the past. I recently visited a fresh juice outlet and ordered a glass of cocktail juice and just as I was about to take the last sip, I saw a dead housefly at the bottom of the glass. That was indeed very disgusting and it led to puking all the juice that I had already drunk. This form of disgust can be classified under core disgust as it directly involves my senses and in this case the sense of taste and vision. Another case that I experienced was when I was attacked along the way by armed robbers at night. I had just alighted from a bus when suddenly two men armed with guns appeared from the nearby building and demanded that I give them all the cash that I had. I had no choice but to comply with their demands as my life was greatly in danger. They then told me to run very fast and never to look back. This was a very disgusting as well as a shocking experience. This form of disgust can be linked to moral disgust as the men who robbed me acted against the set moral codes of conduct.

Conclusion

I firmly believe that disgust is a form of emotion as it directly connects to our inner feelings. Core disgust affects how we relate with other people as well as evoking inner feelings when we meet some people.  Moral disgust directly affects how reaction towards certain things that are likely to affect our sense.
