The Notebook - Movie Review Example

The Notebook, one of the most sincere and emotionally saturated romantic dramas of the last twenty years, was directed by Nick Cassavetes with Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams in major roles. The film begins as the touching story of love read by the elderly man from an old notebook to the woman at a nursing home. The story he reads is a story of the relationships of a young man and a girl from different social classes living in Northern Carolina. Noah and Ellie met occasionally and spent unforgettable summer together until they were separated by their parents at the beginning of World War II.

During the war, everything changed: Ellie, a nurse by that time, got engaged with the successful businessman, while Noah spent his lonely days in memories in the ancient house which he managed to restore. When Ellie read about it in the local newspaper, she understood: she needs to find him and shape their future. It then turned out that their feelings for each survived despite the time and distance spent apart and they were unable to separate afterward.

The most touching scene for me, as probably for most viewers, was the scene of the reunion of the heroes. Until that very moment, it is unclear if Ellie will be able to choose Noah, her true but old love, and sacrifice a much more promising man and their glorious future with him.  As often happens in dramatic stories everything happens in the most critical moment- just before the wedding. So Ellie and Noah did not meet for seven long years keeping memories about each other deep in their souls. But as it often happens between people, when they finally meet they desperately lack words, simple words to express all that puzzling and unexplainable emotions that tear them from inside. Ellie and Noah take a trip in a boat and all they can do is look each other in the eyes silently. But then something unpredictable happens- it is starting to rain and they get wet completely. This outbreak of natural power and the unexpectedness of the situation make heroes more courageous and provoke their confessions.  Being silent for long seven years Ellie starts screaming at Noah accusing him of letting her go and at that moment it becomes clear that their separation was accidentally directed by someone else, someone who kept Noah`s letters from Eliie. So in the moment of revelation, the heroes understand that true love waits and nothing is over for them still.

The movie is very optimistic as it gives viewers the most valuable thing in life –hope.  Everyone knows that life is absolutely unpredictable and people can lose contact easily with each other but if they are united by something more serious than time and distance, they have hope.  The love of Ellie and Noah was full of obstacles beginning with their positions in society and ending with Elli`s meeting with Lon. The ending of the film is really precious proving that when passion goes away it is pure love that remains.
