As postulated by the opponent theory by Solomon, it is the most inspirational factor in the idea of a hedonic state that makes one feel right and leads to the reduction of intensity state. Unfortunately, the more positive feeling we get from the continued use of drugs, the more tolerant we become the regular users of drugs. By so doing then, the individual automatically becomes addicted to a substance. Therefore, withdrawal effects become wanting each time the drug is used. He further explains the paradox of addictions that it involves two opposing reactions that he terms as A and B results (Houghton, 2007).

The greatest dependence on the drug is the initial response he calls A (the need for the drug). Usually, after the tolerance becomes high and intense to cope without the B reaction (that which causes craving), and leads to the use of more drugs. The honeymoon period of drug addiction results in great feelings of joy and mild depression. This initiates a stronger B response where one cannot survive without these drugs. However, the end results are that becomes nothing special again to mark the end of a honeymoon. Hence, the withdrawal period is intensively unpleasant (Houghton, 2007).

From this theory, addicted individuals lack self-regulation the ability to control their emotions. To help manage this sense of anxiety, bad moods, and craving for these drugs then they have to employ emotional self-regulatory skills such as meditation. Thirty minutes of meditation can mitigate negative feelings such as anger, stress, and depression. This involves paying attention to physical sensations and emotions. Addicted individuals need to take care of their selves by getting plenty of sleep every night and eating of regular nutrition. Stimulating work and fulfilling the satisfaction of achievement to illicit a good feeling (Bernstein, 2007).

Self-realization is another technique used to overcome these emotions by trying to think if you feel the same way for a day or months irrespective of the feelings experienced. Daily practice of relaxation exercise will help lower blood pressure and boosts confidence. Consulting with peers, students, teachers, friends, parents, and trusted coworkers will help manage ways of dealing with disappointments, anger, frustrations, and anxiety that lead to drug usage (Khan, 2003).
