Historical maltreatment of psychiatric inpatients affiliation Historical maltreatment of psychiatric inpatients In the article, the traditional approaches used to treat psychiatric patients have been criticized. The article also cites that the approaches were not based on science and research but in belief and superstitions. In the traditional society, abnormality was not viewed as a disease but a curse. For this reason, medical advances to find medicine and treatment approaches were limited (Butcher, Hooley & Mineka, 2014).

Psychiatric institutions used cruel means of handling and treating psychiatric patients. For instance, patients were tied down to minimize their locomotion. They could stay in this position without access to any medical attention. The practice was directed to separate them from the society. In an argument by Butcher, Hooley & Mineka (2014) inpatient were only subjected to confinement rather that medical attention. The negative perceptions towards abnormality did not require new advances towards finding or creating cure.

Other articles also share the same perception. The articles assert that traditional medical approaches towards psychiatric treatment were blinded by the social perceptions towards abnormality. However, the fact that medical technology was limited is also recognized. Minimal medical advances were made in realizing appropriate medical approached to deal with abnormality. For this reason, inpatients were subjected to physical confinement to limit their destruction and self-harm. The main points presented in the main article are supported by the assertions portrayed by the supporting articles.

Moreover, there is a shared assertion that the traditional approaches to psychiatric treatment were highly inappropriate. In addition, few patients would recover from abnormality. ReferenceButcher, J. N., Hooley, J. M., &Mineka, S. M. (2014). Abnormal Psychology. Boston, MA: Pearson.
