TERENCE Introduction Ancient scholars have played an important part in most of the activities and processes of life that are characteristics of modern life. Most of the things which people do today have their foundations in great thinkers whose thoughts have continued to remain relevant across ages. One of such great thinkers was Sigmund Freud, whose views in psychology, sociology and other related fields have been significant in understanding some important activities and processes in everyday life. This paper attempts to look at some of the impact of Freud’s views on the concept of dreams, management in business and other organizations as well the field of social research. There are many places where these perspectives have been instrumental in understanding various phenomena, however, this paper will attempt to look at the three areas and examine the significance of Freud’s perspectives. Significance of Freud’s discoveries about the language of dreams Whenever we are sleeping, every person does experience some form of dreams concerning different events. Some dreams are usually about what one was doing or taking part in during the day, while other dreams may be about different things. The concept of dreams has been a controversial issue in many people, with many trying to understand the mechanisms under which people experience dreams and whether they are an indication of any thing in real world; this is the central point of discussion in this paper. It addresses the concept of dreams; according to the way Freud, a social and psychological research expert, has put it across whose, perspectives have continued to influence academic and social thinking. According to Freud, dreams cannot be compared to spontaneous sounds made by musical instruments whenever they are struck (Wilson 2005), or an external force by the hand of a performer. In addition, dreams should not be thought to be meaningless images in the mind of an individual, signifying the awakening of one part of our minds while the other one sleeps (Freud, 2010). Instead, it is important to know that dreams are valid psychological phenomena, representing a fulfillment of wishes. Dreams are usually established by a highly complex process of the mental state of particular individuals, and can be classified in the continuity of comprehensible waking mental state. Dreams are an important process for every person, research that has been carried has seemed to underpin the importance of Freud’s view while attempting to interpret different dreams. Significance of Freud’s discoveries about management Management is an important activity that spans several centuries back, where scholars and thinkers purposed to establish important perspectives about how people work as well as how their effectiveness and efficiency can be used for the benefit of particular organizations. In modern times, organizations that are thoughtto have good management are often seen as being highly effective; they are able to effectively respond to the changing environment and uses diverse strategies to enhance the effectiveness of their workers. Different scholars, have researched the concept of management, with scientific management having been strongly influenced by Fayol, although other people made meaningful contributions that are still practical and relevant today. The perspectives of Sigmund Freud have been used in many industries with better results although some people have dismissed them on technical grounds (Sahin, 2012). According to Freud’s traditional theory “x” on management, people are always lazy and hate work; they may choose to avoid it when given an option. He says that people are not always ambitious and do not take any initiative to be responsible, all they want is security. The only way to work with such people is by motivating them into attainment of goals and objectives of the business. They are supposed to be coerced, intimidated and punished in order to work effectively. In this realization, managers should come up with better methods of motivating workers for proper performance. They should create policies that appreciates nd rewards better performance and punishes any wrongdoings and misconduct among the workers. Significance of Freud’s discoveries on social research Social research is an important practice in most career fields in modern times, it is only through research that new ways of practice and management in organizations can be achieved. Research has been thought to provide important recommendations for solving certain problems and challenges. This section looks at some of the important aspects of social research as proposed by Sigmund, and how different people in their research activities can apply them (Delanty & Strydom 2003). Social research is described as the process by which research is carried out by social scientists, and follows a certain systematic plan. The methods used in conducting social research vary depending on quantitative and qualitative dimensions applied. Different methods of research can be classified as being qualitative or quantitative, however, most of them comprises of both elements. Sigmund Freud is one of the scholars whose perspectives on the process of social research have been used in many fields in modern times. Freud had a longing to institute a strong relationship between the process of psychoanalysis as well as sociology. This was evident in most of his previous works where he put more emphasis on discussion about antagonism that existed between the process of civilization and instinctual life. Freud played an important role in presiding over the foundation and modification in social links as well as the advent of civilization (Halsey 2004). In this way, he was able to establish an understanding about qualitative and quantitative aspects of research that continue to influence modern practices in social research. Conclusion In conclusion, it is important to understand that whatever activities and processes take place in modern life, there is research that has already been done about it. People should therefore use these research findings and recommendations for the processes of value addition in particular activities. In general, success and effectiveness in important activities and processes like organizational management can only be attained when particular players know and understand those things that can make them tick. For this case, research comes in handy, at the same time, views and perspectives of great thinkers play a vital role. Social research continues to remain one of the most reliable activities that can provide important recommendations for improvement of different society processes, for the benefit of all its members.
