Impact of Financial Problems on Mental Health Introduction Mental health and disease is a direct product of what is happening in a person’s life, environmental supports available to a person and the emotional stress that affects them. When pressure from the environment reaches an unbearable point mental health is compromised. In the current status of America and all over the world, financial issues are the most stressing to people. They lead to mental illness in various ways. Many adults are facing unbearable economic and financial crises whose impact on mental health can be significant to disable their mental status.
Issues related to debts and unemployment have ranked the top on the list of economic causes of mental illness. The reason most people end up in drugs is mainly related to financial pressure that they were unable to handle (www.lifeline.org) Economic crisis produces secondary mental health effects. These effects often lead to an increase suicidal thoughts, alcohol and drug abuse as a coping mechanism (WHO). Besides these secondary effects, money worries are causes stress. Which is always the first symptoms that all is not well in the mental status, this stress may result to more severe and long term problems such as physical weakness, lack of pleasure depression, lack of sleep and even loss of appetite.
These signs worsen the stress situation leading to a breakdown and severe depression. Since they do not solve the financial situation, and only render the victim incapable of seeking solutions, the stress only worsen the mental status leading to a complete compromise that can be hard to reverse (WHO, 2009).ConclusionThe mental health effects of economic crisis can be handled through social welfare and support policies in a society that will help people to retain jobs and even train them to diversify income sources for financial security.
This will go a long way in reducing pressure that can lead to mental illness.ReferencesWorld Health Organization, (2009). Financial crisis and global health: report of a high-level consultation.
