Major Issues of Paraphilias - Assignment Example

Paraphilias is a persistent and intense sexual interest which does not involve genital stimulation or other typical sexual-related practices. When this condition places the individual at harm it is referred to as paraphilias disorder. An example of this disorder is an intense sexual interest towards watermelons. Several theories are associated with the development of this condition.

Firstly, this interest may be associated with unresolved childhood problems or inner conflicts. Many psychiatrists have stated that individuals with this disorder perform their actions due to fear of castration. Therefore, if an individual was fond of watermelons from his childhood, he may use this watermelon to confirm his sexuality. He may link the joys or excitement he receives from watermelons and use them to excite himself sexually. The fear of castration may lead to psychological impotence as he will be unable to sexually excite himself the physiological way.

Paraphilias may also occur due to low self-esteem and abuse during an individual’s childhood. An individual may have been abused all his life as a child and the only happy memories he remembers are of the colour of watermelons and how he ate them alone in his room. These actions may trigger an intense attraction to the watermelons from the child as he feels attached to this fruit. The child may also have low self-esteem and not spend time outside and the only other source of contact he has besides his abusive parents is a watermelon.
