When Kristopher remained in the custody of the Shattos, Russian officials and the boy's biological mother protested and began fighting to get him back. As a result of this case, Russian officials are adamant about not allowing Americans to adopt Russian children. I have mixed emotions about this article, many of which cannot be justified due to a lack of information.
If Max was subjected to abuse or neglect at the hands of his adoptive parents, then Kristopher is in the same danger and is still living with his parents. Since American officials do not find fault in the adoptive parents, they could be condoning their possible abusive actions. If the was no abuse caused by the parents, then there was neglect as Max sustained injury that his parents did not look into. All the same, the bruises on Max suggest that there had been some form of abuse, regardless of where it came from, and his adoptive parents had been negligent in determining its source.
In that way, they are just as guilty of child abuse as if they were the ones to administer the abuse themselves. If these allegations against the Shattos are false, then Russian officials are destroying the reputation of the parents to push their no-adoption agenda against Americans.
