The ego operates on the principle of reality. Developing from the id, the ego guarantees that the desires of the id are expressed in a worldly tolerable manner. Although ego notices the lady, he suppresses his feelings. Then we have the superego character. The superego holds our moral principles of right or wrong (Hergenhahn, 2008). In the video we see the superego checking for something on the notice board and he is not destructed even when an attractive woman is passing by. Later when the three combine, we note that all three elements of psychology are essential for the multifaceted behavior in humans.
I also agree with the theory of the conscious and the unconscious mind. We sometimes react to situations because of experiences that are stored in our unconscious mind. Different experiences in people lead to people reacting differently to a particular circumstance.
Discussion two by Dylan
According to the above-named discussion, we see Dylan not fully agreeing with Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic theory on the ego, id, and the super-ego. He tends to accept the id part only. I tend to disagree with this discussion. This is so because the writer only focuses on the negative part of human behavior. We see him talk of original sin, violence, and perverted morals. Once in a while, we have all thought of doing something wrong but we have managed to suppress our feelings. That’s where the ego and the superego come in. There are certain actions that ‘we all’ see as bad regardless of our developmental milestones. It is only the ego and the superego part of us that helps us fight within ourselves although sometimes the id takes over (Hergenhahn, 2008). The world would be a chaotic place if we were to live by only the id.
I agree with the second part of the discussion; latent dreams which are dreams we do not remember and manifest dreams which we remember. I agree with him when he says that when we dream, the id is always much more alert than the moral part of us. This is so because, most of the time we dream of things that our morals cannot allow us to do in reality. We always dream of our greatest fears and greatest achievements. In our dreams, everything always seems to be alright when we are in control and we always fulfilling our innermost desires.
