Puberty Puberty is defined as the period of onset of sexual maturity and functionality of the reproductive organs. Puberty is manifested in both boysand girls as the secondary sexual characteristics appear. Girls experience growth of public hair, growth of breasts, and first menstrual period whereas boys experience growth of pubic hair, growth of facial hair, growth in the size of penis and testes, and deepening of voice. In addition to that, growth of pimples of face is commonly experienced by both boys and girls during puberty.

Puberty influences adolescence physically, psychologically, and emotionally. During puberty, the body undergoes frequent changes in the levels of hormones. The hormonal changes cause frequent changes in the mood. As a result, adolescents feel overwhelmed with joy sometimes. Sometimes, they get very depressed. Mood swings are frequently experienced by adolescents during puberty, though girls experience them more often than boys. Puberty brings along with it the excitement of exploring sexuality in the adolescents.

Growth of the sexual organs instills confidence in them. They feel a transition from childhood into adulthood. Many adolescents tend to try new things, including smoking, alcohol, and drugs etcetera. Their tendency to try new things increases their vulnerability to all kinds of risks, because of which adolescents need close supervision from the parents or guardians. Puberty mostly starts at 10 or 11 years of age in girls and between 11 and 12 years of age in boys (Kid’s Health, 2013) and lasts till about nineteen years of age.

Puberty ends with complete maturity of the sexual organs. As it ends, adolescents are transformed into adults. References:Kid’s Health. (2013, Feb. 15). What is puberty? Retrieved from http://www.cyh.com/HealthTopics/HealthTopicDetailsKids.aspx?p=335&np=289&id=1828.
