PTSD: A Unique Diagnosis Here Here Here Here PTSD: A Unique Diagnosis Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is designated as a psychological abnormality that can result from exposure to traumatic incidents (Wilson, 2012). The definition may seem straightforward, but there are several considerations to be made that reveal some ambiguity in the diagnosis of PTSD. It stands out as a mental illness due to the apparent presence of an obvious cause. However, the definition of trauma varies from person to person and on a moment to moment basis.

Additionally, exposure to trauma is not sufficient to warrant a diagnosis of PTSD alone, as it must be followed by the abnormally persistent presence of multiple symptoms, such as flashbacks and physical anxiety associated with reminders of the event. Another severe complication arises as PTSD symptoms closely match what would be considered a normal reaction to intense negative stimuli. Clearly, the diagnosis of PTSD is not as straightforward as it may initially appear (Yehuda & McFarlane, 2009).

A better understanding of the difference between abnormal and normal behavior can be achieved utilizing the "four Ds" model. Responses to trauma are considered to be abnormal when they meet the criteria included in this approach, including deviance, distress, dysfunction, and danger. A person suffering from PTSD will display a response that can be considered as deviating from the socially accepted norm (due to intensity, duration, etc.) while also causing a great deal of distress to the subject.

The deviant reaction and distress ultimately leads to dysfunction within relationships and other aspects of life, as well as introducing the element of danger as the person becomes unable to perform everyday functioning.
