Humanistic Approach Reaction Paper - Personal Statement Example

Your full November 30, Humanistic Approach Out of the different theories of personality development in psychology, which include behaviorism, psychoanalysis, cognitive psychology, and biological psychology, I am really impressed with the features of humanistic theory. Cherry (2012, par.2) states that humanistic psychology presents such a therapeutic approach in which the counselor helps the patient play with creativity while discovering the opportunities for personal growth and advancement. I believe that the humanistic approach tends to enable the client to discover his real self and understand his feelings.

The client becomes competent enough to create choices and make decisions. I also feel that all the branches of humanistic approach, like Gestalt counseling, depth therapy, and transpersonal psychology, ensure a strong and close relationship between the therapist and the client. The most impressive thing that I find with this approach is that it highlights the individual’s unique competencies and potential so that he is able to explore his self through creativity and self-awareness. He is able to explore creativity which further helps in self-actualization and personal advancement.

Humanistic approach also offers the therapists a holistic approach which focuses on the individual himself. Another interesting feature is that humanistic psychology is not based on scientific methodology like experiments. It uses qualitative research methods which may include case studies, open-ended questionnaires, structured and unstructured interviews and observations. So, the qualitative research in humanistic psychology is helpful for learning at the individual level. Hence, these features of the humanistic approach impress me more than I am interested in any other theory of personality development in psychology.
