History of PsychologyChapter 3Zigong asked: “Is there any single word that could guide one’s entire?” The master said: “Should it not be reciprocity? What you do not wish for yourself, do not do to others (Haidt 45).”My Thoughts:Such a quote is extremely helpful in that it teaches people how to live in today’s society. It means that individuals have to treat one another the way they hope to be treated in order to live in harmony.“That which is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow; this, in a few words, is the entire Torah; all the rest is but an elaboration of this one, central point (Haidt 45).

”My Thoughts:According to this quote, all the things that people hate are universal, meaning that the things that despise me also despise others. Therefore, it is imperative not to do unto others what I hate as it will also annoy them.“If everyone around you is your sibling, and if the survival of your genes depends on the survival of your queen, selfishness becomes genetic suicide (Haidt 48).”My Thoughts:This quote teaches people to live in brotherly love, as assuming that everyone around us is our brother will help us live in harmony.

Chapter 4“Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye?. You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor’s eye (Haidt 59).”My Thoughts:This quote teaches people not to be so quick to judge others before they look at their own deeds. That is how humans are, the judge others without considering their own deeds.“It is easy to see the fault of others, but difficult to see one’s own faults.

One shows the fault of others like chaff winnowed in the wind, but one conceals one’s own fault as a cunning gambler conceals his dice (Haidt 59).”My Thoughts:Similar to the first quote, this quote also scrutinizes how humans are quick to see the faults in others forgetting about their own faults. They quote also informs that people know about their faults but choose to hide them by revealing the faults of others.“A he-goat doesn’t realize that he smells (Haidt 63).”My Thoughts:This quote informs people that humans, naturally, do not realize their mistakes.

The smell of a he-goat is compared to humans and their faults. Humans, just like he-goats do not realize their smell, do not also realize that they "smell", but feel the smell of others.
