One of the persons who jumped from the bridge who was featured in the film named Gene Sprague. He was described by his friends as always saying "kill me" in a joking manner so they did not thought that he would actually jump to his death on the Golden Gate Bridge. Another friend said he was afraid of contrasts because he was always wearing black and was always surrounded by black in his room. Genes friend who he met at an event said that Gene was always looking for love online. He advised Gene that he cannot find true love on the internet but Gene still continued his search on the web.
With these information from Genes friends, it can be observed that he was not just lonely but in a state of depression. This may be because of his childhood wherein his mother had relationships with men who later on left them. On Genes part, he also had relationships that did not last long and end up being left alone. According to the The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Suicide Assessment and Management suicides are caused by psychiatric disorders as well as cultural attitudes. Cultural attitude toward suicide include ending personal sufferings, sacrificing oneself and as a social statement.
In terms of the ethics of the film, since it was presented as a documentary, it is just realistic to show suicide attempters in the film. The film makers only wanted to shed light on these high suicide rates and call attention of officials to take actions to prevent suicides on the bridge. The film is disturbing yet alarming that it would move even ordinary citizens to make actions on the increasing suicide rates in the Golden Gate Bridge. From the perspective of the families and friends of the suicide victims, it was their decision to take part in the film and this ethical on the part of the producers because they first asked the consent of the families and friends.
