Historical and Modern Psychology al Affiliation Historical and Modern Psychology The present form of psychology existed many years ago because scientists can trace its applications. For instance, people practiced domestication and training of dogs many years in the past. Babylonians possessed the technology of speculating the causes of epilepsy and made successful attempts to treat the disease. Egyptians could be able to do the surgery of the brain early in the world history. These examples show that modern psychology originated from the psychology in the past, which assisted people to live well (Solso, Maclin, & Maclin, 2008).

Modern psychology and historical psychology differ slightly based on definitions, but they refer to the same idea. Historical psychology referred to as the science of mind while modern psychology refers to the scientific study of human behavior and mental process. Modern psychology deals with the study of mental processes instead of mind, which was the concern of early psychology. The modern psychology does not consider mind because it is not possible to study mind with the use of scientific procedures.

The early definition of psychology does not consider the overt behaviors of both animals and human beings, which modern psychology find to be extremely significant. The definition of modern psychology also replaced the notion of considering psychology as mere consciousness with the mental processes. However, modern psychology has a strong relationship with the historical psychology because both of which have an interest in how human beings and animals interact in the environment (Solso, Maclin, & Maclin, 2008).

Therefore, modern psychology originated from the historical psychology because, in the world history, people applied similar techniques like the ones the modern psychologists use in training animals such as dogs as well as speculation of psychological problems (Solso, Maclin, & Maclin, 2008). The only difference is that, modern psychology does not focus on the study of conscious and mind, which was the case with the historical psychology (Solso, Maclin, & Maclin, 2008).
