India Immigrant Interview ReportInterview ReportArjun Mehta had immigrated to the USA shortly after his graduation in 1980. He had principally come to the USA with the intention of seeking higher studies, but the opportunities available to him after his higher education in the USA were so many that he did not give the decision of staying in the USA for work a second thought. This paper provides a summary and analysis of Arjun’s interview.Arjun Mehta got married to an Indian American girl, named Vida.

Vida’s grandparents had moved to America from India in 1918. Vida was born in the USA and was an Indian only by race. Arjun’s marriage to Vida failed because of incompatible attitudes of both. Arjun came from a conservative background while Vida was way too modernistic, and reluctant to adjust herself to the expectations of Arjun. Arjun became a registered engineer in the USA in 1985. Thereafter, he offered freelance design consulting services and made a lot of money out of this business.

While Arjun happened to improve himself financially, he seemed to be losing ties with his family. Failed marriage with Vida taught Arjun the lesson that it was he who had to compromise in marriage since he was a foreigner there. Then Arjun married Rita, a white American girl from whom, Arjun had three children; two boys and a girl. Arjun spent a lot on their education and grooming, but unfortunately his elder son became drug addict and alcoholic as Arjun couldn’t keep an eye on him owing to his and his wife’s extremely busy schedule.

In our modern society where both parents usually work, if there are two parents at all, and there are computers, smart phones, a bazillion cable television channels, I-Pods and more it is literally impossible for a parent to be on the job all day, every day” (Bussey). Drug abuse is a growing risk for teenagers in the USA (Langfield, Maclntyre, and Turner). His younger son is doing good in studies. Arjun is also worried about the marriage of his eldest daughter, Flaura. Arjun wants her to be married to an Indian man, but she is dating Dan, an American boy and has decided to tie knots with him.

Arjun was quite overt in the expression of his emotions during the interview. Since the topic of discussion was about his life and there was a lot he had never shared with anybody, Arjun did not hide anything, be it his lost ties with his family in India, his first divorce, the drug addiction of his son, or his daughter’s affair. He was emotionally driven and sharing gave him a sense of relief. Arjun should have got married to a native Indian girl before moving to the USA. He should have maintained close contact with his family back in India.

He should have raised his children in India. Arjun is a kind of person who has moved to America physically, but cannot compromise on the Indian values.
