Love madness Love is an element of human nature ideally meant to be accompanied by recipro companionship, intimacy, and passion for both parties in live (Levay and Valente, 2010). However, this is not always the case for most individuals who report to have fallen in love or are in love. The “madness” of love comes in many forms which may lead to the justification of the quote “Love is merely a madness and deserves a dark house and a whip as madman do.” Some of those forms are stalking, unfaithfulness, obsession, unrequited love among others.

The purpose of this topic is to therefore disprove the common notion that love is always a good thing and to show that everything in life has the positive and negative side.Stalking is the continual pursuit of a partner to such great extent that it becomes annoying, suspicious and arouses fear to the stalked individual.

According to research, 3.4 million people who are over the age of 18 years are stalked each year in the United States and majority are stalked by current or former intimate partners whom they are or were in love with (Baum, 2009). Stalking to an extreme extent may lead to death of the victim being stalked. This majorly happens in cases where the stalker sees the person being stalked with another partner. Jealously and being rejected are reported to be the cause of stalking. Such extremes of love causes love to be qualified as a bad element in a human being’s sexuality.

The other negative aspect of love is unfaithfulness of partners in a relationship cemented by love. Unfaithfulness is mostly in the form of sexual unfaithfulness where one partner gets involved in sexual intimacy with another individual other than his or her partner. Unfaithfulness is reported to be the cause of many divorces in the United States. Negative effects associated with love include trauma (that may cause the person never to love again), physical illnesses as a result of extreme emotional pain (Whelehan, 2010), physical violence (like destruction of property and gender-based violence) and to extreme length may lead to murder (of either partner by the other partner).

The next issue is obsession with the person one is in love with. Obsession in this sense means that the person in love wants to know every single detail about the daily life of the partner. This includes calling numerous times during the time they are not together to find out what the partner is doing and with who and when they will be through. This reduces the privacy of the individual being obsessed. It is not as extreme as stalking but it annoys the partner being subjected to such cases of obsession (Baum, 2009).

The effect of obsession is that apart from invading on the privacy of that person, it may cause friends of that person to get bored and leave and may lead to separation. Separation is majorly due to issues of mistrust by the obsessed partner.The last love “madness” is unrequited love (love that is not reciprocated). This may be due to loving a person who already in involved with someone else for example through marriage or engagement. It may also happen when there are differences in sexual orientation of the individual being loved.

The major cause of unrequited love is however physical appearance of the person pursuing that love (http://www.jstor.org/stable/10.1086/661921). It most certainly leads to rejection of the pursuits or a relationship with no commitment. These may lead to suicide of the rejected individual, murder of the person not reciprocating the love (to great extents) or just feelings of dejection and rejection (Levay and Valente, 2010).The above discussion has shown that individuals in certain phases of the relationship may experience the negative side of love and should therefore look for ways to avoid those adverse effects of love.
