The purpose of art therapy is the same as that of psychotherapeutic modality. That is, to improve the emotional and mental wellness of the affected (Moon, 2001). Art should be recommended because it is a remarkably strong tool. Art becomes a form of expressing one's innovativeness and creativity which leads to a person’s fulfillment. This makes a person grow emotionally and have a feeling of personal achievement. Therapy involves the person who has the psychological problem, the process that the person will go through so as to overcome the problems and the product of the art.

Through art, the individual increases self-awareness and gets to cope with depression and haunting experiences (Moon, 2001). Visual images get to be used because they have a strong impact on the person as they make him or she feels comfortable to talk to the therapist. Images are the fastest to register in a person’s mind before a person uses oral art. They are able to deal with their feeling without withholding or denying. Images help people to resolve inner and outer conflicts, reduce stress, increase self-esteem, develop interpersonal skills and relationship and learn to appreciate himself or herself.

As a result of this, a person can make changes in his or her way of thinking and feeling in his or her life. People with long term depression feel restricted, and they have the urge to feel and think freely. The psychotherapist displays images in the art psychotherapy so that the individual can respond to something new. As a result of this, the person starts feeling an increased sense of personal wellbeing. This increased personal wellbeing has a positive impact on the individual as he, or she has to deal with experiences that led to his or her state of depression.

Also, a person can express feelings and thought when familiar patterns present themselves. This helps the person discuss with the psychotherapist and him, or she gets the necessary help (Slayton, D'Archer, & Kaplan 2010). Art psychotherapy can be beneficial to people with mental illness. The person gets to interact with the psychotherapist and other people with mental illnesses and him, or she does not feel intrusive. The person improves his or her social skills. Many people with mental illnesses have no control over themselves.

Through art psychotherapy, a person becomes capable to have control as he or she gets to use an art material which gives him, or her choices of work (Moon, 2001). People who have a relationship or achievement problems are dominated by their emotions and sometimes they act on things they do not understand. Through art, they are able to express their emotions and ideas and discuss them with the art psychotherapist where they are guided on the best efficient way to deal with their emotions (Wadeson, 1980).

People who have achievement problem always look down on themselves and have low self-esteem. It is necessary for them to undergo therapy and see things differently.
