? “Depression” Introduction Every individual has different perception depending on the nature. How things are perceived and understood is directly co-related to the personal outlook, psychology as well as various predicaments. The insight and thoughtfulness of the individuals provide them with the ability to grasp the situation and tackle accordingly. The methodology one adopts to tackle the situation depends on the intellect as well as prior experiences under certain circumstances the situation becomes tough and the individual cannot control the things. The things seem to recede away and here germinates the feeling of despair, anguish, hopelessness and distress together leading to depression. The situation has to be taken care else it may turn out to be distressing (“Depression”). In medical terms, depression is a rigorous state that engages mind and body altering the thoughts as well as mood of the person. The implications are devastating resulting in alteration in the attitude and behavior. Routine and schedule of the person are greatly hampered, moreover, a feeling of disgrace and negative thoughts keep blowing the peace of mind. One becomes highly apprehensive and, thus, the entire personality of the individual is changed (“Depression”). ` Milestones in the path of depression To evade stress in the present epoch is not possible. Individuals are in the race to prove their worth, to meet the set targets and position the new set aspirations. In order to meet these pursuits and to be ahead in competition, promotion and amenities every single person is striving hard and also trying to fulfill the cropping demands. Those who are capable can do miracles and wonders but those who are unable to meet the challenges germinate frustration, anguish, distress, agony, pain and sufferings. This state is popularly known as depression. Depression is gaining prevalence irrespective of the class, color, age or any social standing. Depression affects females to the greater extent than males (“Depression”). Depression is also associated with the genetics of the organism, direct and indirect environment of the individual, happenings and incidents where severe losses have been incurred, socio-economic reasons which are gaining prominence due to mounting inflation. The condition is attributed also by certain medical predicaments. How individual reacts is highly significant as the individual has positive psychology and like to sort ways to reach to the solution (“Depression”). Genetics predicaments: Depression in certain cases runs in family. Some individuals get this from their parents and, hence, it is in their genes. Although no such reports are available to prove this, but it is observed in the history of the family (“Depression”). Environment: The immediate environment of the individual encompasses the family atmosphere as well as the peer pressure at work place, school or college and carves the personality of the individual. The competence that is positioned at every step of life, the competitive environment both at the work place and educational institutes are responsible for germinating the seeds of depression. Environment also defines the phenotypic characteristics of an individual. The individual gets exposure to the situation and develops wisdom to deal with a given set of conditions. The phenotype is also influenced by the environment (“Depression”). Happenings in life or incidences also pave the way for depression. The death in the family or of the close relative may germinate the seeds of disguise, anguish or insecurity. In the present scenario, divorce of the partners is emerging as a significant reason for the depression in children. Demise of a close member either in a family or a friend, or separation of parents, changing school – all these can be the contributing factors for depression. Incidence or accidents due to heavy traffic or due to some tragedy may impair an individual’s well being or may lead to permanent damage of certain body parts which may result in depression and frustration due to inability to perform normal physiological function appropriately (“Depression”). Family atmosphere: family is the basic unit of the society. Individuals are groomed in the family and they are being provided with the wisdom to tackle with the situation being imposed. A person may fight battles outside if there is support of the family. The comfort in terms of emotional, financial as well as moral provided by the family is highly imperative and plays vital role in framing the mental makeup of the individual. The psychology of the individual is mainly attributed by the family atmosphere. A positive atmosphere inculcates positive feelings and encouragement while the negative family atmosphere results in germination of seeds of distress. Family is the first step to groom the personality of the individual and when these individuals move out in the society they provide a helping hand to those around if they are positive else they impose their frustration on others. This anguish inculcates violent temperament, homelessness and thereby the negative psychology is displayed. This negativity is the root cause of depression which hampers the self-worth of the individual and the individual feels depressed (“Depression”). Loss of job - loss of job may result in depression and hopelessness where the feeling of being dazed and lost culminates in the mental makeup of the individual (“Depression”|). Medical predicaments - in certain cases medical conditions impose depression leading to hormonal disorder. Depression may generate various stressors. Appropriate medical care may lead to the alteration in the condition of depression and enhance mood and eradicate frustration. If the condition remains untreated, the depression takes a toll and it may result in devastating situation where various organs are affected. Depression is, thus, physiological as well as psychological condition which not only affects the individual, but also influences the immediate environment, depressed individual spreads gloom and anguish making other individuals depressed too (“Depression”). Neurological implications of depression: Every activity, either conscious or subconscious, is registered by the brain which is an intricate network of neurons sending and taking every signal by means of neurotransmitters. The level of these neurotransmitters is responsible for the mood swing and changes in the physiological condition of the individual. On the other hand, the level of these neurotransmitters is altered by the certain drugs that are responsible for altering the mental state in order to reduce depression. Such drugs are, therefore, recommended for the treatment of depression (“Psychology of Depression - Psychodynamic theories”). Psychological implications of depression Psychology encompasses a thorough understanding of mental and behavioral processes as it aids in being considerate towards brain functioning, communication and interpersonal predispositions, motivation and social behavior along with the physiological as well as neurological predilections. Psychology encompasses various aspects of human nature, comprising developmental aspects with which an individual is nurtured (the level of education, understanding towards others, the outlook and insight of the individual). An individual is motivated because of the positive drive provided by the positive psychology; such drive aids in relieving depression, while the negative impact of psychology is responsible for causing depression (“Psychology of Depression - Psychodynamic theories”). One of the key features of psychology includes cognitive studies as it provides an assessment of mental processes. It is the most characteristic feature of the psychologist to understand the attitude as well as propensity of the individual. Cognitive understanding deals with the thoughts of the individual and hence the mental process and depression. As an individual matures, perception and understanding about the circumstances and situation also augments. Some may have the intellect to understand others, learn about the nature and circumstances, react to an event in the more pleasing manner while others tend to be short tempered and reactionary towards a situation and display rage, anguish and depression (“What is Cognitive Psychology?”). At present, where competition is hard-hitting and individuals are chip in a career race, an approach is desired where judgmental move toward attitude could be worked well. One has to be critical in displaying cognitive behavior towards enhanced memory power, quick and appropriate decision making temperament, organization of educational program to boost learning power. Darwin’s theory is applicable in this aspect too: “Survival of the fittest”. An individual, who is alert and knowledgeable, possesses insight and depth to react towards a fastidious situation gaining confidence of others along with the appreciation and will never let depression to take the toll. On the other hand, individuals lacking understanding, knowledge, problem solving skills and appropriate decisive power display poor mental process and lag in accomplishments. The psychological impact and its influence encompass: persistent gloomy, anxious or vacant temper, diminished sense of worth, hopelessness, glumness, guiltiness, irrelevance and defenselessness, reduced interest in creativity leading to anhedonia. In severe cases, when the psychology is disturbed, it leads to suicidal feelings and efforts. Further, diminished energy and poor concentration are observed in case of depression. Depression is associated with difficulty in sleep – either too less or over sleep is observed. Depression influences the psychology to a greater extent and it reduces the appetite or induces eating habits. As a result, there is an alteration in weight. Depression also induces restlessness, constant headache, troubles related with digestion, constipation, loss of libido, etc (“Depression”). Management and Treatment Positive psychology is beneficial for the growth and development of the individual as it aids in building healthy family relationship, empathy, love and affection as well as displaying positive temperament in every aspect of life. Positive psychology not only enables depressed individuals to recognize the problem, but also empowers them to tackle with the situation and eliminate distress and depression. Empowering the positive psychology is more beneficial as compared to addressing weakness (Seligman, 2000). By linking individual wellness, a community change can be procured and positive psychology empowers individuals, communities and society as a whole. Depression is curable if realized. Earlier the realization and diagnosis, sooner the recovery. Psychoanalysis encompasses treatment of cataleptic factors encumbering relationships, work performance, mood alterations and their impact on self esteem. The method is based on the verbal procedures. The sole motive of psychoanalysis is to resolve the issues related to psychological problems by conveying cataleptic clashes to the cognizant mind where they may be tackled and determined. The focus is on basic approaches of practicing concerns and being judgmental on them as compared to the focus on behavior. Psychoanalysis, therefore, focuses on altering the personality of the individual in a complete manner in contrast to bringing alteration only in behavior (Guy). Psychoanalysis is performed to understand the behavior and emotions of the individual. These factors remain hidden in the unconscious mind and generate gloom. These symptoms may in some cases be distinguished while in others it could result in individuality attributes, impede performance in professional as well as personal fronts. All these affects the self esteem of the individual, hence, there is a need to undergo psychoanalytic treatment. Psychoanalysis determines the chronological basis of the problem, changes that took place over point in time and enables one to deal with the truth and eliminates depression (“What is Psychoanalysis?”).
