INTRODUCTION ‘Open Options’ has always strived to produce the best career related recommendations for respective clients, according to their capabilities and requirements. It is the duty of our team to deliver well researched and contextual recommendations and suggestions for those who seek it. Scope, Purpose and Limitations The purpose of this report is to provide our client with relevant and up to date information regarding career choices relating his area of study and field of interest. This report aims at providing useful guidelines for the client and making the career decision easier and profitable for the client financially as well as emotionally. The scope of this report will be immense, since it is based on research conducted with keeping an open mind and eye to many different possible career choices in light the data collected via a personal interview with the client. The research underlying this document is not limited to one career line; rather it investigates diverse fields of career within the client’s preferred career that might suit the client. The report is insightful in its scope since it will also consider the teacher’s personal preferences and not only the available options. The goal of this report is to guide the client in a manner that enables her to choose her own path and not to enforce a decision on to her. This report is limited to the sources available in the locality and online. It is possible that certain options might have been overlooked due to geographical limitations or lack of exposure. However, the research scale was kept as broad as possible remaining within the given resources. Sources and Methods The method employed in creating this report and producing a beneficial set of recommendations for the client involved two parts. Part one was a detailed insightful interview with the client to assess the requirements and qualification of the client, which focused on five main issues namely the client’s educational qualification, her work experience, the level of responsibility that she is willing to accept, the number of days per week she is willing to work and the salary being expected by her; whereas pat two comprised of a detailed review of different pieces of information from various sources available online which offer information on different career options. These sources include: The Occupational Outlook Handbook (US Bureau of Labor Statistics), salary.com and teachersvison.com. Report Organization The report is organized in a systematic manner. After this introductory section, there is a section that encloses the information obtained from the client via an interview, which is followed by the research findings obtained from the sources mentioned under sources and methods portion. The last section comprises of some solid and well structured recommendations for the client, which have been devised in light of information from the interview and data gathered from the previously mentioned sources. 2. CLIENT’S INFORMATION A detailed interview was conducted with the client, which covered information regarding her qualifications, experience, job salary expectations, preferred number of working hours and responsibility level at which he is willing to work. Client’s Preferences The client is expecting an annual salary of about 45 thousand US dollars and is willing to take up a responsible job, where there is some margin of creativity as well. Teaching has always been a passion to her and continues to be. She is willing to work six days a week in an educational environment and won’t mind having to do some planning at home on weekend. The client is seeking a job definitely in the teaching line, where she can see the results of her efforts directly in her pupils and has at least some margin for being unique and creative in teaching methodologies. The client reports that she has a patient disposition and enjoys when she is with kids. She is also interested in developing learning skills among toddlers by using different methods of teaching. The client seems to have a liking for challenging situations and considers herself to be a good time manager. Client’s Qualification and Work Experience The client has not yet had relevant work experience except the 60 hours internship she did after high school to get admission into a college for her bachelor’s in humanities. This internship was in a school setting, but it was not relevant to teaching, rather it was a library based job that required cataloging skills. The client also reports that she did not enjoy this job very much and that she is more drawn towards transmitting knowledge. 3. RELEVANT FINDINGS A thorough online research was conducted after an interview with the client. The findings of the research are listed below: Pre-school teachers having a bachelor’s degree are preferred and better paid however; those with a high school degree and an additional diploma are also accepted and hired at many places, especially in the private sector (BLS, 2009). According to Salary.com (2010), almost 44 percent of total preschool teachers in the USA hold a bachelors degree, round about an equal amount of public school teachers are those who hold a masters degree. Many states now prefer teachers with a diploma in Child development (BLS, 2009). Masters in Early Childhood Education is also available at many universities including University of Phoenix, Capella, Walden University and Ashford to mention a few (Salary.com, 2010). Work environment is very lively and growth orientated. Watching the students learn is also very rewarding (BLS, 2009). According to Teachersvision.com (2010), school teachers are faced with a lot of decision making situations in which time is of crucial importance since there are usually only six working hours per day and the nature of job requires several decisions to be made by the teacher daily. According to salary.com, this job has growth element in it, and better opportunities always keep surfacing for experienced teachers. 4. RECOMMENDATIONS Following are some recommendations for the client: The client must apply for a pre-school teaching position near her home. It is recommended that she start with a private school, since there is greater margin for exhibiting creativity in teaching in such institutes. After spending some time in a private school if she is ready to grow further career wise, then she is presented with two options. First: If her resources allow at that stage, she can join a master’s program and improve her degree which will definitely contribute in improving her earning prospects and on the job status further. And second: incase she does not have enough saving or budget to get further education or she is not in the mind set of entering student life again, she may then apply for a similar position in public sector. This will provide her with an opportunity for experiencing both the work cultures and place her in a better position to decide upon where she is more comfortable. It is also recommended that the client try two levels of teaching during her initial probation, namely, kindergarten and play group section. She will be able to judge in this period the section where she is more comfortable and will help her decide better when the question of final placement surfaces. Since the client is seeking of a responsible job, she might insist to be made the schoolroom in charge or a pre-school class teacher rather than opting for a subject teacher. Judging from the interview, the client seems to be very much interested in personal grooming of young pupils and enhancing their personality. She might therefore opt for additional duties relating to self grooming and personality strengthening that many schools offer. REFERENCES Bureau of Labor Statistics. (2009).
