The president led us into the Iraq war on the basis of unproven assertions without evidence; he embraced a radical doctrine of pre-emptive war unprecedented in our history, and he failed to build a true international coalition… (Nancy Pelosi, 60th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives). Considerable controversy was attendant upon the invasion of Iraq by the US. The analysts have come forward with different explanations regarding the cause of the war. This war was dissimilar to the other wars, due to the vast difference between the justifications put forward for it by its proponents and the true motives.
Subsequent to the war, the people of the world discovered the falsehood perpetrated by the Bush administration. However, this lack of truth was evident to the weapons inspectors and Iraq specialists. These individuals had never been convinced that Saddam Hussein had been in the possession of weapons of mass destruction. Robert Jervis provided a detailed discussion regarding the claims of the Bush administration that Iraq posed a tangible threat to US interests. He was successful in proving these claims to be false.
The Bush administration had also claimed that an Iraqi nuclear attack on the US would be unstoppable. As a result, there was an urgent need, as claimed by Bush, to engage in a preventive war with Iraq. Jervis had unequivocally demonstrated that Bush was consumed with ambition and that he would dominate or depose any regime that he disliked. Thus, it became very clear that Iraq had never posed a threat to the US. A state of direct confrontation and engagement has been in place for the past 40 years, between Iraq and the US.
The policy of the US is to ensure the uninterrupted flow of oil at the lowest possible cost, and compliance with its broader policies in that region. In order to promote and preserve these policy initiatives, the US has violently prevented any Arab state from becoming strong and independent. The emergence of a strong and independent Arab nation would pose a threat to the US and to the Israeli hegemony over that region. Thus, attempts at Arab unification or nationalism have been consistently opposed by Israel and the US.
