Temperature Measurement College The main aim of the study was to understand the temperature measurement of ice water and boiling water in relation to various equipments. Firstly, the junction temperature of the ice water bath at various given environmental condition was calculated. Other temperature measurements were conducted in relation to the working of air conditioning unit and CPU. For this experimental study various types of thermocouple were used .The experiment was conducted in relevance to T type and K type thermocouple. The findings of the temperature variation were recorded in centigrade and Fahrenheit and results were concluded with the help of certain equations. Also the magnitude of error with regard to CPU was the highlight of the experimental study.
Introduction & Objective
The paper is about the study of temperature measurement and the indication is towards ice water bath temperature variations and working of certain equipments like air conditioning unit and CPU. For this purpose the main instrument used is various types of thermocouple. Thermocouple plays an important role in finding temperature measurements and they come in various types. Basically, thermocouples are of various types and in this study T type and K type are used in combination with various equipments. Firstly, this paper looks at the junction temperature measurements of ice bath water at different environmental conditions. Temperature can be measured via a diverse array of instruments and in this study the effort is to find the temperature variation of ice water bath at different given environmental condition. Thermocouples are the main corner stone of the study. According to (Omega Engineering,2013) “All of them infer temperature by sensing some change in a physical characteristic. Six types with which the engineer is likely to come into contact are: thermocouples, resistive temperature devices (RTDs and thermistors), infrared radiators, bimetallic devices, liquid expansion devices, and change-of-state devices”.
The main theoretical equations gone into the study is Steinhart equation. The effort is to gauge the temperature variation in ice bath water and changes they undergo under various laboratory pressures. An ice-bath reference junction is used with a type T thermocouple (i.e. copper-constantan). The main laboratory experiment was to report in the junction temperature of thermocouple in relation to four different environments conditions. Also the temperature measurement with regard to air condition unit is studied where K type thermocouple was used.
Here, the entire laboratory procedure will be observed and for this very activity certain aspect like thermometric property will be studied in relevance to heat radiated from the body of liquids like ice water and boiling water.
Experimental Set Up and Procedure
Here for the experiment, the T and K type thermocouple is used to understand the junction temperatures of ice water and boiling water .The experiment were conducted in regard to ice water bath , air conditioning unit and CPU .The T thermocouple was used to find the junction temperature of ice water bath in conjunction with various given environmental condition. According to (Duff,2010,pg. 1-6 ) “Thermocouples have become the industry-standard method for cost-effective measurement of a wide range of temperatures with reasonable accuracy”. For this purpose certain diagrams and graph will be presented along with a temperature measurement.
The thermocouple output for various environment conditions will be considered to find the junction temperature of ice water in centigrade as well as Fahrenheit. This work was performed with the help of certain instruments and thermocouple devices. (Refer Appendix, fig: 4)The experiment was conducted to study the temperature variation in ice water bath and air conditioning unit. The equipment used for this purpose is T and K thermocouple. Moreover, type K thermocouples (chromel-alumel) are used for measuring the temperature at various locations in an air conditioning unit. Also the CPU and its temperature variation at different working condition is calculated.
Results& Discussions
1. An ice-bath reference junction is used with a type T thermocouple (i.e. copper-constantan). For four different environments conditions, the thermocouple outputs -3.1, 0.00, 8.133, and 11.130 mV. What are the respective junction temperatures (a) in C and (b) in F?
a) The junction temperature in centigrade for -3.1mV is -100c and Fahrenheit is -148
b) The junction temperature in centigrade for 0.00mV is 0c and Fahrenheit is 32
c) The junction temperature in centigrade for 8.133mV is 170c and Fahrenheit is 338
d) The junction temperature in centigrade for 11.130mV is 230c and Fahrenheit is 446

2. Type K thermocouples (chromel-alumel) are used for measuring the temperature at various locations in an air conditioning unit. A reference junction temperature of 22.8C is recorded. What are the corresponding temperatures of the following thermocouple outputs: -1.689, -1.108, -0.113, and 3.185 mV.
a) The corresponding temperature for thermocouple output -1.689 mV is -50c
b) The corresponding temperature for thermocouple output -1.108mV is -30c

3.A T type thermocouple with an ice water bath reference is used to measure the temperature of a CPU over several hours. The average CPU temperature is 45C. During this measurement, the ice in the cold bath melts and the reference temperatures drifts up to 6C. If you assume that the cold junction remained at the expected 0C, then a bias error will be introduced to the measurement. What is the magnitude of the error resulting from the cold junction temperature increase in terms of voltage as well as temperature (i.e. difference between calculated temperature with cold junction at 0C and 6C)?

Summary
The final summary of the laboratory experiment is that Ice water bath junction temperature changes with different environmental condition .Here the main concentration is on the thermocouple type which is T. The thermocouple output decides the temperatures and the different measures of temperature are given out in centigrade and Fahrenheit. In the results and discussion section, one can also find that the air conditioning unit functions at various temperature when it comes to thermocouple K. Finally, the thermocouple K in regard to an ice water bath and CPU is analyzed and the magnitude error is located. The magnitude of the error resulting from the cold junction temperature increased in terms of voltage as well as temperature and this analyzed in the end of the experiment and presented.
