Based on the Law of Mass Action, the ratio [NAD+] / [NADH] is significant in determining the stoichiometric relationship and balance between lactate and pyruvate concentrations or the oxidized and reduced forms of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, respectively. Through the [NAD+] / [NADH] ratio, the redox state in the cytoplasm of a cell can be measured to evaluate both the extent of metabolism and cellular health condition. The ratio is also a factor that largely affects the function of several key enzymes.
