How people tell what choices and directions are most suitable depends on their leadership philosophies. Leadership philosophy guides a leader’s behaviors, actions and thoughts. An individual’s leadership philosophy is influenced through internal and external forces. As a result, leadership philosophies can change as one grows within the leading context. Finding and establishing leadership philosophy implies that one must reflect and explore his/her personal beliefs, assumptions and values. Personal values entail qualities that one values while assumptions entail concepts that one assumes to be true. Beliefs are concepts that one holds to be correct and they shape his or her realities. Through identification of my leadership values, assumptions and beliefs, this paper reflects on my personal leadership philosophy. As a role model, I legitimize my leadership through commitment to values such as compassion, empathy, respect, dignity, truthfulness, authenticity, sincerity and honesty. My assumptions are that leadership competencies are developed and learned, leadership is an enduring process, it is inclusive and does not need an official job position. My beliefs are that leadership is based on trust and one can be lead as long he/she holds the ability to influence and develop others. Based on my experience in school and in practice, I have developed competencies and a passion to lead. My leadership embraces the spirit of caring, reciprocity, dignity, respect, harmony and responsiveness. Leadership philosophies come in diverse forms with different appealing names. Drawing from my experience, my leadership philosophy is a blend of autocratic, democratic, delegative, servant leadership, situational and innovative leadership. My leadership philosophy is guided by passion while my leadership is developed on powerful relationships, participation and responsibility. Introduction Physicians as well as other professionals always stumble on leadership roles in diverse circumstances. In his Twelfth Night tale, Shakespeare indicated that some people are born leaders; some attain leadership positions while others hold leadership drive upon them. The most essential devotions underlying the field of medicine include patients’ welfare, development of research knowledge and education of residents and students on matters relating to healthcare. However, the commitments of physicians also hold other implications which include social accountability to voice out health issues. These implications involuntarily put physicians on an apparent leadership position. As a result, medicine holds the job not simply to serve culture and society in advancement of welfare, but also has a task of taking a leadership role in facilitating development of character and ethics. As a student in the field of medicine, I believe that leadership is essential for attainment of goals in any form of organization. Leadership is driven by a passion to lead. Drawing on my experiences and commitments in leadership position, a core leadership philosophy that broadcasts who one is clearly and loudly and pervades each activity one engages in his leadership roles is essential. Leadership Philosophy I comprehend leadership as the procedure or art of influencing, supporting and helping others to attain a common goal (Fairholm, 2003). Leadership is a personal activity where each leader is unique in his/her own way. However, in leadership, effective leaders must comprehend, express and continuously enhance their leadership philosophies. From my experience, leadership is a quality that is increasingly coveted by groups, organizations and individuals. I believe that the philosophy that serves as the basis for a leader’s action is of supreme importance. When thinking about myself as a productive leader, I believe that there is a power in me that motivates and energizes those around me. This energy is usually accompanied by an authenticity or genuineness pervading everything I do. As an effective leader, I truly understand who I am and I engage in actions that are consistent with my core leadership philosophy. In my opinion and drawing on my experience, a leader cannot be effective without basing his leadership roles in a core leadership philosophy and a passion to lead. However, developing a leadership philosophy entails personal reflection and considerations of philosophical blueprints and assumptions. A leader can also interpret his/her leadership philosophy based on the link between him /her and her/his and subordinates. In this regard, leadership philosophy entails the underlying principles and a cause that prompt a person to act in a given manner. Leadership philosophy is founded on the beliefs, assumptions and values of a leader (Fairholm, 2003). My personal leadership philosophy assists me in defining what I expect and value. This philosophy guide my actions besides letting my subordinates understand what to anticipate from me as their leader. As part of my strategy to adopt a positive leadership style in every activity I engage in, I build outward from the core values and summary of my leadership philosophy. I have come to realize that the true nature of leadership is not founded on procedures, but is founded on teaching and setting values to followers and motivating them to commit to, agree with and adapt to these values. According Fairholm (2013), leaders are motivating because they are themselves inspired through given values that they believe are right, useful and appropriate. Values entail social goals philosophies, principles and standards of an intrinsic temperament. In my opinion, values mirror the essence of who we are and what powerfully enriches our lives. As a result, they become the core of an individual. Values affect the actions an individual takes when faced with a prospect to make a choice. They also influence the manner in which an individual reacts when faced with diverse choices and circumstances. As a leader, I hold numerous core values that include respect, integrity, authenticity, courage, creativity and innovation. I believe that I would rather not lead a group that challenges my core values than violate them. This is because my core values direct my intentions and they affect how I lead. With clear values, I establish a sound basis for leadership. As regards respect, I am a person who believes in respecting others and their views. I usually treat my followers with sympathy, dignity and compassion in order for me to earn their respect. With respect to integrity, I hold the capacity to keep promises and meet the expectations of my followers. I express authenticity through reliability and transparency in my beliefs, values and actions. In addition, I am a courageous person with the strength to face any situation and stand in the face of difficulties. Through hard work and dedication, I use personal efforts to positively impact the goals of my group. I run into difficulties and despite failures, I hold the dedication to strive even harder without discouragement. I usually place my goals appropriately through comprehending situations, confidence, experience, decisiveness, right motives, preparation and perceptions. I am forever set for change, adapt, move forward and establish novel responsibilities and relationships the constantly leadership nature. I serve my group with integrity, respect, courage and honest. I also embrace creativity and innovation as these values promote my growth as a leader and the growth of my followers. My leadership philosophy acknowledges the strong influence my personal values have on how I perceive the world and act. As a result, I deal with my team members and team goals based on my values. I am also willing and able to model my values as needed. Based on my values, I now understand that leadership is not merely having followers, neither is it a title nor is it attained through following certain principles. Above all, in efforts of understanding myself, I came to realize that I have a passion for leadership. I believe that my passion as a leader establishes a blaze that pushes me and my team to attain our common goals. The passion motivates my group in both easy and difficult situations. My involvement in team work has helped me understand that a lead must be comfortable with the preeminent values hold in what they do. Based on my experience in teamwork, I have learnt leadership depends on a leader’s core values. Different people hold diverse assumptions concerning what exactly the idea of leadership entails. These assumptions mould diverse value system and they are translated into diverse organizational practices which strengthen the original concepts (Daft, 2014). Assumptions entail concepts believed or assumed to be correct. As a leader, I hold and understand the assumptions that fuel my leadership thinking. Because it is not easy to understand ones leadership assumptions given that most leaders operate from given paradigms that may not unable them to see the assumptions, I reflected into my leadership in order to uncover my core leadership assumptions. Drawing from my experience in the Leadership Competencies presentation, I drew several leadership assumptions that have helped me in other leadership situations. As a leader of student, I have realized that competencies in leadership are developed and learned (Gupton, 2009). I do not assume that people are born leaders but I believe that people can develop and learn leadership skills. Myself, I was not born a leader but I have developed and learned leadership skills in the course of being in school and in practice. People also hold diverse means of expressing their leadership based on their skills and experience. Drawing from the group experience, I assume that leadership development is an enduring process. One does not learn leadership skills in a matter of seconds, hours or a day. Instead, leadership growth entails constant learning and enhancement and does not entail a simple focus on tasks or products. Via diverse experiences, self-reflection and feedback, leaders constantly fine-tune their experiences and conceptual comprehension on leadership. My involvement in group work and the numerous seminars and workshops that I have attended have offered me countless prospects to grow as a leader. These experiences have made realize that leadership cannot be stagnant. Effective leadership is something that continues to grow on daily basis based on experiences and feedback from other people. My experiences have provided me with the knowledge that leadership development does not occur in class or in an empty vacuum. Instead, leadership development takes place in practice. However, this calls for considerable risk but based on my experiences, considerable risk instigate greater rewards. The risks I have taken in my leadership roles have instigated a more apparent comprehension of my strengths and passion as a leader. When confronted with challenges, I resulted into situational leadership and this aspect helped me to stretch my limits. In my role as a school leader, I have come to realize that leadership does not necessitate a formal job position. This means that leadership does not involve a specific role, position or tile. Instead, leadership can be feasible and embodied in diverse means within an individuals life. Via my experiences as a leader, I realized that leadership is inclusive. In addition, I have learnt that a leader must leverage his/her followers’ strengths in order to provide the best leadership for a given situation. As a result, I have developed a delegative and participative leadership philosophy. The idea sharing and input of other people in group and in school helps in development of consistent commitment to everyone’s roles. Drawing from my experiences as a leader, I have come to understand leadership is founded on recognition of ones strengths. The procedure of understanding and capitalizing on ones strengths is crucial for leadership growth and effectiveness. Collaborations and partnership promotes productive results (Young & Hester, 2004). Through capitalizing and cultivating diverse talents, I managed to grow the talents of my followers besides helping them grow as leaders. Understanding other people strengths entails development of close work links. This way, people got to understand my strengths while I learnt about their talents and strengths too. Through understanding my strengths and those of my followers in school and in practice, I was able to place every member in a role that she/he would perform well. This reflects my transition to supportive leadership philosophy. However, when fears of failure arose, I transitioned from a democratic leadership philosophy to an autocratic leadership philosophy where I required my followers to use their strengths to ensure that the group goals were attained. When faced with difficult situations in my role as a group and school leader resorted to directional leadership and when our role as a group entailed repetitive work, I resorted to a supportive leadership strategy (Rickards, 2005). Through my involvement in group and school leadership, I came to realize that leadership is value driven and ethical. The constant show of integrity, respect and honesty has helped me to make ethical decisions. Through foundation of credibility and trust, leadership becomes effective given that these values facilitate development and maintenance of feasible relationships. Leadership Beliefs Navigating successfully in the turbulent seas of modern leadership necessitates a leader to hold a compass, an inner power derived from having assessed cautiously who they are, what they value and belief (Young & Hester, 2004). Such self reflection and assessment allow leaders to comprehend and better manage emotions and stress linked to leadership roles. According to Gupton (2009), a life well lived is assigned through harmony between what an individual values and how he/she is capable of practicing those values and beliefs. Beliefs entail concepts that one hold to be true. These beliefs mould people’s realities. If a leader deems that the one person who can make choices in a firm must be a management staff, this belief will impact how the leaders views and treats others. Through my leadership experience in school and in group, I have employed my core leadership beliefs in diverse situations. I believe that regardless of the position held in an organization or a group, everybody’s opinions count as a far as the success of the firm or a group is concerned. I believe that good leadership is based on the ability to integrate conventional leadership skills and the capacity to inspire others. Competence generates good leadership, but the requirement to link with followers generates effective leadership. In this regard, I believe in participative, delegative, supportive and democratic leadership styles. My experience in group work and presentation have made me realize that dialogue and relationship drive the success of a group or a firm and the leaders must support followers to set free their potential instead of mandating or managing performance. Drawing from my experience, I believe that that satisfaction of employees is not adequate, but leaders must ensure that their followers are committed, prepared, aligned and talented. As a result, building on talents and strengths of followers promotes positive results. In addition, I have come to realize that actions are essential for success and calls for courage and plan. In order to develop feasible leadership beliefs, one has to tackle issues relating to leadership. I believe that trust is a crucial element in leadership. From my experience as leaders, I learnt that if followers do not trust their leader, the level of leadership becomes limited and unsuccessful. In addition, the ability to connect and establish feasible relationship is essential for productive leadership and it depends on the leaders’ attitude towards his/her followers. Based on my experience as a leader, a successful leader faces the problem instead of running away from it. More so, a successful leader is trustworthy and does not engage in unethical behaviors. I have also come to learn that commitment is paramount for effective leadership and it helps in development of credibility. During our group discussion and presentation, I realized that credibility translates into enhanced performance, respect and positive attributes. However, to ensure credibility as a reader, I had to focused, accountable, loyal, trustworthy, competent and honest. Summary/Conclusion Through my experience, skills, research and interactions with other people, I have learnt that leaders influence and impact followers in profound ways. Whether it is as group leaders, school leaders and organizational leaders, living out core leadership philosophies attracts others. Core leadership values, assumptions and beliefs influence and impact others in a way that makes a life-changing disparity. It should be comprehended that a well articulated leadership philosophy is essential. However, a leadership philosophy is not the only condition necessary in order to be an outstanding leader. It is essential to acknowledge the importance of leadership skills, comprehension of leadership theories and the crucial temperament of healthy task behaviors and relationships. Nonetheless, holding a definite core leadership philosophy is the finest and most essential means to be intentional regarding how leadership is performed. Core leadership philosophy enables leaders to attain new heights. From my experience, the best way to lead people entails understanding oneself. With respect to Maxwell law of magnetism, a leader chooses followers based on who she /he is (Maxwell, 2014). As a leader I hold a vision and suitable mechanisms to make my followers to be productive. In addition, leadership philosophy should be from the heart and effective leadership is based on passion. From my experiences and skills that i have attained throughout my academic life and practice, I have developed a passion for leading others. I have demonstrated a passion to lead through the way I interact with my followers; the way I treat them; he way I handle my roles and address leadership issues and my attitude towards other people. I have developed a positive attitude towards leadership. I hold a powerful vision of my leadership goals besides a passion that allows me to communicate my vision and mobilize other people to assist me in attaining my vision. I hold the desire to develop others through reinforcing their abilities, strengths and skills. This aspect has influenced the way I do things relating to leadership. I demonstrate humility and commitment while working with other people. The fact that I view other people as capable p other than mere followers is clear indication that I have a passion to lead and grow others. During my tenure as a leader in school and a group leader, I inspired, motivated and influenced my colleagues in our goals attainment.
