Personal Narrative It was a bright sunny day when I woke up on Tuesday morning. I was spending time at my grandmother’s place during the summer break at their small yet comfortable and warm home. I have always enjoyed spending time at my grandparent’s house mainly because of the pampered handling that I received. The yummiest pancakes made by my grandmother each morning, long peaceful walks across the farm, fishing at the lake with my grandfather and going out with my grandfather to his farmhouse was always a delightful experience and I never grew tired of it. On that particular day since I had no plans with my grandfather, I decided to meet up a friend in the town and go out with him for horse-riding after a long time. I was really excited for the day as I was planning this for a long time but the busy school schedules and routine always became an obstacle. I woke up to the smell of the fresh pancakes and maple syrup and hurriedly changed into my clothes that were appropriate for horse-riding. I picked up my Ipod which is one of the accessories that I usually kept along with me whenever I went out. I had all my favourite playlists in it and it is one of my most valuable possessions up till today. I went downstairs to the kitchen and kissed my grandmother on the cheek, ate breakfast and headed out of home to complete my adventurous trip. The town boasted of natural beauty and fresh greenery and it was one of the things that always attracted me to my grandparent’s hometown. I put the earphones and played an up-beat tune to enjoy along with the visual treats of the town. Around two blocks away from the house was a large oak tree that I loved to observe and I always took a moment to enjoy its humongous exquisiteness. It was a really old and gigantic oak tree with thousands of birds nesting in it and assumedly it was one of the highly populated and eventful trees of the town! I stood by the tree, looking at the birds chirping and making noise, flying from one branch to another. I moved on after a few seconds of idle observation. There was a main road in the centre of the town which was the busiest and the most crowded of all the roads. I always found this road packed with cars probably owing to the shops which were present on both sides of the road. I thought about calling up my mother from the phone booth across the road before going to my friend’s house as it was her birthday yesterday and I had completely forgotten to wish her. I started crossing the road, being indulged in the loud music and my deep thoughts. I completely ignored the traffic signals and kept moving forward. The next thing that I heard was a strong screech of tyres as I looked to my left and a big bus was approaching towards me, like a monster. I felt a strong blow and a sharp pain shooting across my legs and in a flashback, my parents and my little brother crossed my mind. Subsequently, I completely lost consciousness. When I regained my consciousness, I saw through blurred vision different faces hovering over me, calling my name and trying to insert a needle across my arm. I pulled away my arm when I felt the pain. I assumed that I was in an ambulance. My leg was aching so much that I was not even able to move it. The pain was so excruciating that I could not think of anything properly nor could I understand what was going on. Everything seemed like a dream as if it was not real and I would be back to my grandparents’ house in a moment. In my state of semi-consciousness, I thought about my mother and father. I wished they were besides me and I could listen to my mother’s comforting voice and my father’s words of being strong. In those brief moments I realized that I had never expressed openly to my parents how much I loved them and the amount of compassion that I had for them. I had never appreciated the little things my mother did for me the whole day from making breakfast for me to cleaning my room. I had never told her the importance she held in my life and without her I could not be what I am today. I never appreciated my father’s efforts for our family and the amount of hard work he put in his work only to see our smiling faces at the end of the day. I realized in those brief moments of consciousness that I did not want to die this early. I wanted to do so much in life and I had not accomplished all my goals. I felt a sudden wave of fear and despair overpowering me. I thought about what would happen if I died. I started feeling a sense of nervousness and hopelessness started dawning over me. The fear of death and the notion of having no more life was smothering and suffocating. I wanted to graduate, and start my professional life, spend more time with my family, travel to places, but all could not be completed if I died! My stream of thoughts was broken when I felt a sharp needle in my arm and went again into a state of sleep. When I again opened my eyes, I found myself in a hospital room with the machine beeping at my side and a strong smell of hospital medicines. I tried sitting up but I was held back by a shooting pain in my left leg and the wires connected to my body. I looked down at my leg; it was wrapped in a white plaster and it was difficult to move it because of the pain. After a few moments of anticipation, a nurse entered into the room with a tray of medicines. She greeted me with a smile and asked how I was feeling. I ignored her question and inquired about my parents. She told me that they would be arriving soon as they have been informed. She told me that I had and accident which resulted in a leg fracture, small amount of bleeding and minor bruises. She told me that I was put on sedatives because of the intense pain and I would be able to walk after the plaster was taken off and the fracture healed. I felt reassured and thankful that everything is going to be fine. It was indeed an unforgettable experience of my life, not because I had an accident or a broken leg. But the brief moments in the ambulance were filled with regret, fear, despair, hopelessness and anxiety, which made me feel close to the idea of not living anymore. The idea was so overpowering that even now when I think of that semi-conscious state I get goose bumps. I comprehended the fragility of human life and the unpredictable world that we live in. Hence, every moment we spend, every relationship that we have, and the happiness we achieve should be cherished. Life should be lived to its fullest as we never know what could happen even in the next second. If we follow this positive attitude towards life, it would not only provide for contentment but we would also have no regrets or remorse. Read More
