of Conduct and Mission ment Module Module ID: of Conduct and Mission ment Almost all professions, organizations and institutions have developed some code of conduct in order to perform their professional obligations as well as while dealing with the customers and clients to which the products or services or both are being offered. This code of conduct keeps the professionals on right track, and explicitly elaborates the occupational behavior during one’s interaction with colleagues, co-workers, superiors and general public at large. The code of conduct not only maintains discipline and order in public, private and business environment, but also it is extremely supportive in respect of sustaining decorum and mannerism in society in general. The professions including healthcare and medicine, legal system and judiciary, housing and buildings, revenue and others strictly adhere to professional code of conduct, which not only enhances their honor and respect as a community, but also discourages violation of rules and misconduct as well on the part of the professionals. Consequently, the individuals serving against authoritative positions particularly remain well alert and conscious about their conduct, so that they could avoid and escape the complaints made by the public on violating the professional ethics explained and defined by the profession code of conduct. For instance, legal profession does not allow any type of advertisement of their services to the lawyers; consequently, the lawyers are not allowed to even prepare any flyers of large boards containing their names, qualification and professional experiences etc in order to capture the attention of clients. Similarly, lawyers and doctors are bound to keep the secrets of their clients to themselves, and code of conduct strictly prohibits them to disclose any kind of information their clients have discussed with them as medical or legal counsels. Code of conduct stringently commands the professionals to perform all their duties and obligations with honesty, integrity and dedication without making any compromise on the quality of the work they are offering to the customers and public. The code also instructs them not to conceal any truth or reality to the customers; even it is bitter, unpleasant and problem creating for the clients. Similarly, code of conduct vehemently condemns raising false and lame excuses in order to delay one’s responsibilities in the wait of extra favors or bribery to be extracted from the public. Additionally, code of conduct censures offering gifts to the officials and superiors as well as to provide undue favors to the seniors, friends and relations in order to practice nepotism and thus depriving the deserving members of society of their just rights and privileges. Moreover, the professionals are bound to display equality and justice to others without taking their gender, age, class, community, race, ethnicity, religion, regional background, financial position and sexual orientation. Since the professionals have taken oath or have made promise for displaying equality, justice and fair play to all and sundry, they cannot commit wrong with others on the basis of their appearance or socioeconomic background at all. Personal Code of Conduct: Personal code of ethics is the conduct designed by the people to regulate one’s personal attitude and behavior in public dealing. Being a qualified civil engineer, I am expected to provide a wise and expert counseling to the management, contractors, co-workers and other people. Personally, I feel excited on finding something creative and constructive, and thus aim to remain busy instead of sitting idle. Images of dams and bridges particularly excite me, and I look for inventing new methodologies of designing the buildings in an innovative way. Distinguished philosopher and writer Sir Bertrand Russell has rightly stated in his Conquest of Happiness (1996) that even the dullest work is more enjoyable and less painful than idleness. I will stick to this golden principle in order to remain happy and contended. Since I have never made any compromise on principles, and unconditionally value integrity and truthfulness, I will offer my services with unconditional commitment, devotion, dedication and honesty. I am determined to respect everyone, and will never exhibit arrogance and pride towards others. I will strictly abide by all the rules prevailing in the society, and will never take advantage of my status and position at any forum. Creativity, truthfulness and sincerity are my distinctive qualities, which I will display at my utmost. I have decided to display extreme level of indifference towards bias and prejudice, and will deal every visitor with kindness and impartiality. I am determined to observe regularity and punctuality at my work place, and will keep all the official secrets confined to myself, which would never be discussed with any irrelevant person or outsider at any cost. Since I believe in God and His sacred commands, I will interact with the public with compassion and care. I will never take bribe from the public on rendering the services I am already engaged to perform. I will keep the interest of nation, society and organization in view, and will not exercise any activity that may put the reputation of my work place at stake or jeopardy. Thus, I will not corrupt my office by applying favoritism, nepotism, bribery, dishonesty and malpractices. Professional Code of Conduct: Since I am a qualified civil engineer, I am under obligation to apply my abilities and technical proficiency on all the projects and plans I have been appointed to work on them. As a result, I am determined to incur my creativity and mechanical skills in the best interest of my nation and my people, according to the ethics defined and elaborated by Japanese Society of Civil Engineering in 1938. The society lays stress upon “respecting nature while giving the highest priority to the safety, welfare, and health of generations today and in the future, and for endeavoring to preserve and work with nature and the global environment for the sustainable development of mankind.” (JSCE, 1999:2) I aim to dedicate myself to my work place, and will apply my mental capabilities, educational qualification and technical proficiency in theoretical work including the sketches, designs and drafts developed to examine the feasibility of projects and architectures on the one hand, and in developing them into practical form by making them a physical reality on the other. I would dedicate my passion and capabilities during the completion of the tasks I am expected to carry out. Since a civil engineer carries out the construction plans including construction of highways, bridges, large buildings, dams and much more, he is responsible for the safety of thousands of precious lives. Consequently, he should not make any compromise on the sustenance of the high quality of the constructions he is involved into. Since “a professional engineer gets engaged in the professional practice of rendering service or creative work requiring education, training and experience in the application of special knowledge of the mathematical, physical and engineering sciences, he gets involved into consultation, investigation, evaluation, planning or design of public or private utilities, structures, machines, processes, circuits, buildings, equipment or projects, and supervision of construction.” (Professional Engineers Act, 2011: 1) I am determined to improve my skills as a civil engineer; it is therefore I plan to obtain my doctorate degree in engineering. I will consult my superiors and colleagues at the eve of the commencement of a new project, so that an expertise opinion can be attained before the completion of the projects. I will never take myself as an expert, and would certainly examine and investigate into the projects before finalizing them for construction. Personal Mission Statement: My personal mission statement is: “To become the part of a reputed organization and its pleasant as well as competitive environment as a professional, so that I can acquire more and more knowledge and experience and hence can exercise my innate creative abilities and learned technical skills in a refined manner for the best interest of my people society.” Another mission statement adopted by me is: Applying and observing of creativity and dedication for personal and professional growth, as well as for leading a respectable life in society. Hence, I will concentrate upon learning and obtaining experience for personal growth and for the welfare of others. It has been well stated that the best persons are those, who work for the welfare of others on the basis of his gifted talent and expertise. Hence, I will utilize my talent to help and support others in the affairs related to construction and building.
