Lutheranism and Calvinism Question 2: Martin Luther (1483-1546) has been one of the most important reformers in the history of the reformation in Christianity and he was born into a miner's family in Saxony in central Germany, which was dominated by the father. He was fortunate to receive a good education and decided to become a lawyer. In his early twenties, Martin Luther had an experience of being thrown to the ground by a bolt of lightning during a thunderstorm, and this made him choose a monastic life.

As a highly sensitive, energetic, and troubled young man who had become obsessed with his own sinfulness, Martin Luther joined a monastery in Augustinian order and he was eager to get the sight of God. Due to his intellectual gifts, Martin Luther was able to pursue studies at the University of Wittenberg and his scholarship, especially in the Bible, helped his progress towards a reformer. In 1517, he was forced to break up with Rome and he dedicated his life to the spreading of reformative ideas.
