Customer Inserts Grade Course Introduction The US society has been considered as the birthplace of modern democracy and therefore it is expected to be one of the most progressive and fair societies in the globe. But, the question that still begs is if the American society is fair and if justice is accessible to everyone in this country. The question is better explored in the book of Gary Kessler who writes in chapter 5 of his book about justice in the United States of America. The book explores the theme of justice and how it is exercised in the United States. The process of achieving comprehensive justice is difficult in any country in the world. This includes the United States of America, where a lot of different kinds of people live in the country. The country still faces the problem of achieving true justice in the region. Thesis Statement: The United States is a very democratic nation but achieving justice to everyone is still impossible in the country. Overview There are different people who are campaigning for justice and equality in the United States. These people are driven by the preservation of the human rights and interests of different people in the country. For instance, in his book Grey talks of the difficulty in achieving equality since people have different vested interests. The US constitution guarantees the equality of all citizens of the United States as it is protected by the first amendment. However, some specific people have different interests that are special and not guaranteed in the US constitution. Injustice in most cases in the United States of America occurs in a different manner and as result; it is difficult to achieve equality in this country (Isbister 97). Injustice occurs in different manners mainly through discrimination based on race, sex, religion and sexual preference. These are the major reasons as to why justice cannot be easily achieved in the United States. Race: This is one of the major deterrents of equality and justice in the United States since racial discrimination is practised in many facets of the American society. In the book, the author mentions the kind of discrimination that exists in Euthanasia and this does not help in bridging the gap in the society. For instance, minorities such as Native Indians and Hispanics exist in sectors such as healthcare, education and the economy persist. The interests of major groups prevent people from minority groups from accessing their rights since their interests triumph over other rights. In his book, Kessler explains that justice involves the distribution of burdens and benefits fairly according to the relevant differences and similarities. Therefore, based on this we witness that justice has not been practiced in the United States of America for a long period of time (Kessler 118). During the Hurricane Katrina disaster in the United States that affected most of the southern states heavily populated by black population. The response to the hurricane was slow and this goes out to shoe that racial discrimination prevents the dispensation of justice in the United States (Isbister 119). Sex: Gender segregation and discrimination has become a common form of injustice in the United States. Certain jobs have been reserved for different people and these jobs include services of people in the fire service, special corps and other jobs which are reserved for men. This discrimination that is gender based does not help bringing justice to the United States. In most cases, there is no law of natural justice since it is flawed and made by human beings. Human beings are created differently and this leads to inequality among different people in the society. Because of the gender disparity in the US society it is difficult to come to the conclusion that it is possible to find justice in the United States (Kim 212). Discrimination and disparity based on gender is quite difficult to cure and this grows the gap in the allowing for justice to be practised. The issue of gender has been so emotive that it features highly in many presidential and elective politics in the Unites States. In his book, Kessler he argues that by giving preferential treatment to minorities such as women in so called affirmative action amounts to an injustice. Since, the principle of justice states that all things or everybody is equal. He states that human beings operate using the law of compensatory justice. In that if a person is injured then that person should be compensated. This principle tends to ruin justice and it goes against the grain of justice since it amounts to an injustice. Religion: The United States of America is a large country with a myriad of religions that share different believes and this leads to creation of friction among the different religions. In this case, some religions have members who are targeted from other religions and this leads to improper treatment and problems from other religions. Getting justice based on religious division in the United States is quite difficult since faith based decisions are quite difficult to change or influence (Cannon 167). Some religious factors have contributed to lack of justice in the United States such as events that are religiously motivated. For instance, during the 9/11 attack of the twin towers it is people belonging to the Islamic religion that bore the brunt of being Muslims. As a result, religion is a major factor that needs to be looked at in the process of creating justice in the United States. This is not the only incident that prevents the achievement of justice in the Unites States through the use of the religious card. The hate and animosity that is created among religions makes it difficult to achieve justice (Cannon 191). Since every person belonging to each of the religions will favour his/her religion. Sexual Preference: This is a factor that prevents the push towards an equal and just American society. In his book, Kessler points out to a situation known as Euthanasia that contributes to an unequal society. One of the factors that contribute to an unequal and unjust society is sexual preference. This is a type of discrimination that has recently been in the limelight since people are discriminated based on this point. For instance, the US military does not allow for gays and lesbians to join the military (Kessler 115). As a result, a lot of people have been locked out of the military and this contributes to discrimination leading to an unequal and unjust society. In his book, Kessler points out that it is the interests of the heterosexuals that prevent the homosexuals from being enlisted in the military. He continues further to point out that if the situation had been turned the other way round then is would have been difficult to say that heterosexuals are not allowed in the military. The main reason that the author points out that the way we treat other people who are different and we perceive as a threat lead to an unjust society (Kessler 114). Most of the people who are different are seen as a threat and therefore we will always have an unjust society. The above factors are not the only ones that contribute to injustice in the society since the environment in the society allows for inequality to thrive. Injustice is brought about by diversity in the society and this creates a problem of balancing different varying interests. As a result, the society tends to develop discrimination and this leads to the problem of unfair treatment among the different groups in the society. Personal View Justice in any society is fundamental in keeping peace, harmony and development of relations. As a result, we have to understand that having good relations will assist in boosting tolerance and understanding amongst one another in the society. Justice involves bequeathing equal opportunities to everybody to exercise freedom and for his/her rights to be respected within the society. The book by Kessler points out at Euthanasia whereby people are discriminated based on sexual orientation and lack of fair opportunities to share among the different groups of people. Fighting for justice is difficult since human beings are selfish by nature and they will always put their interests first before all other people. In this case, I am of the view that laws and statutes should be created for allowing people to exercise their rights and reduce segregation of people. For instance, the first amendment is a good law that protects the rights of every individual as enshrined by the constitution. However, caution should be exercised in a ensuring that all stakeholders are in agreement on certain laws and issues. Conclusion The American society is a collection of many ethnic groups, religious and people and thus it can be described as a melting point of people. However, in this hybrid society it has been difficult to achieve justice and equality since people have been pulling in different directions due to differences in culture, religion, race or preferences. In his book, Kessler points out the example of Euthanasia which disallows gay or lesbians from enrolling in the military. This difference coupled with others leads to a major problem that contributes to injustice in the United States.
