Intelligence in Thirteenth Floor Introduction The controversial technological advances that have been invented in the modern day technology have been reflected in various venues that boost the lifestyle of the societal members. The leading focus has been placed in technology that entertains and makes business transactions easier. The economic and psychological comfort is abetted by the technological advances created to highlight the faults presented in the existing system. However, there are limited presentations within the technology developed to be ranked as outstanding among the given list. Before they can be relayed within the society to serve the members, the devices created need to be tested to ensure the necessary comfort and safety measure is reached to avoid complications that may harm the individual. Moreover, the adverse effects may be witnessed in the summed effects when the technology is observed as a national security threat. These are the measures considered in the construction of intelligence, and it has to clearly define the purpose of its creation. The pretesting of the intelligence that might be created has been supported in the creation of simulation that explains the preceding phenomenon. Movies have been created to explain the technological intelligence to be created in a world to follow the present. Creative movie directors are capable of predicting events within their movies to use characters with higher intelligence that hold the message of a higher intelligence. Josef Rusnak’s “Thirteenth Floor” had been created based on the intelligence created on a virtual reality world. Although these environments are fictional and present measures that are dependent on the movie’s plot development, the intelligence within thirteenth floor can be merged with the created technology to create an actual depiction of the events within the movie. Plot Development The character that draws controversy in the movie development is Hannon Fuller, who had successfully developed the intelligence in a virtual reality simulation to depict Los Angeles in 1937. However, the system is not complete in testing, and the events that follow the invention create the twist needed to predict the events that follow. Fuller is murdered before he completes testing his machine, and the suspect presented in the case is Douglas Hall. The events that had led to the murder are blurry to Hall who finds blood on his shirt to lead him to present doubts over his innocence. Hall had been Fuller’s apprentice and friend ad had helped with the project that saw a new technology developed in the company. The LAPD investigated the murder case with McBain heading the investigations to grant the meeting between Jane Fuller and Hall (Rusnak). Jane and Hall establish a romance that lead to the culmination of the events that would witness the attempted shut down of the VR system (Rusnak). Jane is against the technology and had plotted to invent strategies to oversee the demise of the program. Another murder is presented in the bartender who had witnessed Fuller and Hall’s meeting which lead the suspect to be apprehended. However, Hall is soon released after Jane testifies against the action to disapprove the suspects. Hall, full of anger and suspicion attempts to derive the truth of the events in the message that he had been left by his mentor, Fuller. He meets Jerry Ashton who had learnt the truth that the world he had live in had been a simulation and that Hal was a visitor from another realm. This had been through a message that Fuller had addressed to Hall, and he attempts to murder the foreigner in the quest for redemption. Ashton attempts fail as Hall manages to escape from the world in time before the assassination in the virtual world. He attempts to find Jane in his world but finds a copy who fails to recognize him leading Hall, to reveal the truth that his own world is a simulation. Revelation Hall’s worlds had been revealed as a simulation and one that had managed to create a parallel dimension with a simulated dimension. The director also explained Jane’s role in shutting down the VR simulator as a directive from the “real world” when she had assumed the role as Fuller’s daughter. Hall had been a simulation of Jane’s husband in the real world, David, who was the murderer out of jealousy because his wife had fell in love with Hall. The role of Ashton in the movie is meant to reveal the truth when he is reveled as Whitney, Hall’s associate to assume the role in the character and attempt to murder the leading character. His death in the simulator led his conscience to be transferred into Whitney’s body and murder’s David in the simulate world of 1990. David then assumes Hall’s body to attempt to harm Jane to lead to his death in the hands of McBain. These events eventually lead to Hall travelling to 2024 and assume David’s body, where he meets Jane and her father, Fuller to present an outstanding union. Possibility of creating the world depicted and assumption of characters The explained world in the Thirteenth Floor is based on the manipulation of the conscious mind and feelings. Once the functionality of the brain is understood and explained, the inventions placed to aid the system can be manipulated, just as Fuller was able to successfully implement. The brain functions to implement the versions read in the environment to reflect the conscious as perceive in the completion of the adaptations needed. The virtual worlds created had been the reflection of the character traits depicted in the “real world”. Jane enters the dimension knowing the existing virtual reality in the world depicted; however, he falls in love with Hall, a reflection of his real husband (Rusnak). Chalmers explains that the body lacks direction and purpose without feelings and feelings are the basis that drives the completion of the individuals. In the simulated worlds, the events are completed because of emotions and law. Without these principles, the truth would have never been revealed, and Hall would not have found the truth behind the creation. The virtual world can be created based on the emotions that drive the actions of humanity. The systems based on psychological manipulation present the idea that links actions to emotions. The society is created based on the relationships established in individuals. The idea to create or complete an action is dependent on the will of the personality to attain their goal. When a virtually simulated society is created, like the one on Thirteenth Floor, the characters are accorded the emotions of the controller. The new character in the world is a reflection of the inner emotions within the original person and projects the similar behavior based on the wants of the unconscious mind. Jackson (291) explains that physicalism is based on what the mind is trained to envision, and this may be based on the desire to complete the actions trained by the mind. The nature of the characters created within the virtual realm would be dependent based on creation. The assimilation of such a technology would need careful research into the functionality of the brain and implication to the original character. The formation and inspiration driving the creation of a virtually simulated society is based on the connection established from the traits linked to the leading character. In his article, “What Mary Didn’t Know”, Jackson explains that the creation of the brain can be projected to resemble the normal interaction with the immediate surroundings. Humanity is based on the perception derived from daily interactions with natural entities. We live according to the justified activities that we have grown to associate with in the dimension witnessed. The reality created is in the mind and presentations that we are capable of interacting with in the society. With a new world placed, the immediate interactions would be recognized as foreign by the physical mind, then the subconscious that determine the viability of the presented forms. Ashton’s Consciousness The technological advances in the virtual reality system have made possible the creation of alternative forms. The characters respond to the gestures accorded by the controller and would not be independent as Thirteenth floor reveals. Ashton as a projection of Whitney is an unconscious character under the control of his creator. He presents the traits and actions that Whitney controls on using the provided device. The director indicates that Whitney logs into the system to assume the form of the bar tender to eliminate the enemy in Hall. Therefore, Ashton is explained as an unconscious character and is under Whitney’s control without acting independently. The holder who determines his moves within the simulated world manipulates what he feels and communicates. Ashton can be linked to Mary in Jackson’s argument because he did not have the knowledge that his world had been virtually created until he intercepted Fuller’s message (Jackson 293). The worlds created in the Thirteenth Floor had been peaceful and without chaos until the truth revealed that the entire universe had been a project. These characters presented emotional independence as they had acted based on the conscious presentations revealed in the system created. The movie explains that the user that logs into the system presents the awareness of the events in the virtual world, which is untrue of the reverse form. Searle (8) explains that the human brain is complex and humanity has never understood the contents fully in the attempt to recognize the contribution made in delivering a concrete existence form within the society. The advances made in the intelligence created have been a limited version of the needed knowledge, and the realm warrants research to measure the progress needed in filling the gap. Searle explains the development stage in technology to be compared to that of the time that held discovery of the organ function within the body. The evidence supported is that the brain is a complex diversity that enables humanity creates the technology based on the interaction with the physical subjections. The importance is accorded the connection achieved with the virtually created world as related to the physical society created that the society has grown to recognize. The ability to recognize the real from the constructed realm proves to be the necessary provisions in relating to the subconscious. The advanced society possesses the technology needed in the manipulation of characters to hold significant emotions that are related to the human conscience. Conclusion Thirteenth Floor had been created based on the events that issue the relationship of the brain too the physical activities conducted. The movie explains that emotions are the most powerful interaction mechanism with the physical environment. Ashton had been used to represent the relationship of the virtual simulation to the character because the brain is capable of identifying the real world from the virtual. However, humanity is capable of determining the variable presentations in the physical and constructed society due to the concept of phylicalism. The movie explains that the conscious mind is constructed based on the interactions achieved in physical relationships and the perceptions in nature. The virtual society can be created to be based on the reality, but the participants should be accorded independent virtues. The disturbance in the established relations, in the virtual world, may lead to the chaos that may be subjected on the known society.
