College Position to Paradox of Horror Despite consideration to the contrary, that nobody seeks out something simply because it disgust or frightens, this does not protect the argument that people don’t seek for something simply because it frightens or disgusts from the argument that people can sometime seek out something since it frightens. There is lots of proof to this fact that people can sometime seek out something because it frightens. Questions have always been asked on the reason why people get scared by something that they know does not exist. An example is a group of people watching a horror movie and they get scared yet they know that what is taking place is just fiction and nothing serious. And this is the point where I will start my argument. Someone can and many people go around looking for scary things not because they are forced but because they find excitement in the horror part of art. Many people get scared but still continue to love the art of horror and the scary nature of the horror art. Someone can seek for a scary thing or disgusting thing for entertainment. Since the times of the Romans, scary acts have been used for entertainment. This can be seen from the way that criminals were killed. Some of the criminals were set out and a lion left to eat them as a large crowd watched and celebrated. This shows that there is a sense of excitement in humans when they get scared over something. Most of the people who seek horror in art mainly do so because of its entertainment nature. Therefore I can say that the above saying that no one can seek out for a scary or disgusting thing is wrong. People can seek out scary things and movies because of their entertainment nature. Someone can also seek horror and scary art scenes so as to remove stress. Stress has been known to disturb man since creation. Many people forget about their stress when they see something that is scary. This is because when they see the disgusting part of the art, they forget about their problems and start to feel for the situation that is making them scared. At this point their stress goes away and they become relieved for some time. Therefore someone can use horror to remove stress that they have. This clearly disapproves Lovecraft’s idea that no one can seek for any disgusting or scary thing. Many people look for scary things to remove stress and this is a better argument to prove that Lovecraft statement is wrong. People also seek scary art so as to take a lesson from the art. When people see how someone suffers, they get the lesson not to what the victim did to undergo such suffering. Some people just love learning lessons about something and so when they get to see how someone has suffered, they get thee reason of his/her suffering and take it as a lesson so that next time they don’t do the same mistakes as the ones done by the person who suffers in the horror act. Apart from the educative nature of horror acting, there are people who love horror simply because of its scary nature. When they experience the scary part of the horror, they get some excitement that makes them feel better. Horror is like part of their life so when arguing this, these people should not be left out of the debate. This group of people help to prove that there are people out there who go for horror acting because they want to and not because they are forced. If we say that people don’t look for scary acts because they like it then it means that everyone who participate in the production and anyone who enjoys horror movies or act do so because they are under some obligation or that they do that because of circumstances that they can’t avoid and if given a chance they can do the acting or watching of the horror movies. This is an invalid argument since almost everyone who watches horror movies do so because they love it and not because someone has told them to watch it. Many people would argue that maybe their love for horror movies come due to the influence of the people around them and the environmental conditions that favor the watching of horror movies, however it is important to remember every horror fan has to make a personal decision and follow what he wants and not what others choose for them. Therefore someone cannot blame the society since it is their decision that makes them get into the horror addiction and the love of scary acting. Horror is part of art and since art is made for people, then it means that horror just like any other art can be used for entertainment purposes as well as educative purposes. Therefore horror is part of art and should be treated just like any other type of art. Since other types of art are enjoyed by people from a personal level, then this automatically means that some people may prefer scary and disgusting scenes for entertainment and not as an obligation. Therefore it is true to say that someone can willingly enjoy the scary and disgusting part of art as opposed to the paradox of horror which states that no one can seek for frightening acting. If it was true that no one can seek for horror, then there would be no horror in the first place. The existence of horror means that sometime back, someone invented the art of scaring people and many people liked the idea. If someone introduced horror then it means that it is something that others can seek and get entertained with. If people never liked horror then it would have been extinct due to lack of attention from most people but this is not the case. Therefore I can say that, the people like and seek horror and that’s the reason why it has always been in existence since its invention and many people fall for it. Anyone who claims that no one seeks frightening and disgusting things should consider the reason why horror is one of the most selling pieces of art in the whole world. Horror just like any other type of artistic works is addictive. As we all know, something cannot be addictive if it is not done at will. Horror is interesting and that is why it is addictive, if it was not interesting then no one would be coming for more of it. Therefore it is done at will. Nothing that is interesting can lack people who go around seeking it. This clearly shows that horror just like any other piece of art has lots of people looking everywhere for it. Therefore the argument presented above indicating that no one can look for horror is unrealistic since nothing interesting can lack people who love it. In conclusion I would like to say that even though Lovecrafts presents points to prove that no one goes around to seek for disgusting things that is not part of art, I would like to point from the above that there are lots of people who go around looking for horror not because they are forced by some circumstance but simply because they love horror and the excitement that it brings to them when they watch and participate in disgusting and scary scenes.
