Harris Kamran Religion and Theology Discussion Paper 8 July Contemporary Jewish Treatment of Disability The scope of attaining a good educationby Jewish students with special needs has increased manifold in the recent years, along with a greater expectation for better educational services both by the disabled students and their parents. This change can be attributed mostly to the enactment of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, IDEA, by the congress in 1975 (NICHCY), which has led to a greater enrollment of disable students in both public and private schools, and the provision of better opportunities for them.
Also, owing to the activities of Jewish educational agencies like NICHCY, CAJE, NJCL, PTACH, and others, there is now a greater awareness among the Jewish community and educational bodies as regards to the special needs of such children. Of course, the economic factor has played its role too, as schools need to increase their income to maintain their increasing budgets (information provided). The increase in the demography of disabled students means schools are obliged to increase their enrollment was well.
This field is interesting to me because it deals with a very special and important area of concern for the Jewish community, and holds a lot of promise for improvement. Given the rate of development in this sector, I am confident that it will only progress for the better in the future. It has a humanitarian aspect which appeals to me, and I am also a staunch believer of equal educational opportunities for all students, despite their special needs.
