Extract of sample "Group Reflection and Working with a Team"

I could say I have learned a lot from our group activities and did not just teach me about our lessons but more so about how I should deal with other people, which I believe is also very important in my future career. Saying working with my group mates has been a good experience for me because I have been blessed to have had them as my group, might sound like sugar coating but then it is true. The task may have not been always easy but we were able to work things out because of the unity shown by each individual and we have gone through the process identified by Tuckman in the formation of a group.

There have been a lot of times we met at the lab for our work and I could not remember how many times we have already met together to complete our tasks. Reza, being the one with potential leadership skills stood up as the chair to guide us through the process. Being a sociable person, she was assigned to do the first part of our task while I did Antenatal Clinic, Maysara worked on delivery, and Adin on post-natal care, the three of us picking what we thought we could perform best. In the following meetings, we checked all our work, compared notes, and shared ideas about our assigned tasks.

We had to work on activity diagrams and use cases individually but still, we met at the lab to work as a team, helping each other in parts where one finds difficulty doing or understanding. When we made our sequence diagram, we again met and this time, we all brought books and shared website links related to our topic and we read through the session. This was also an individual task we were supposed to do however, we still met with each other which to me, was a very important matter as I saw the support of my group mates.

We learned a lot of new information in our readings and I could say I have grown in knowledge of what we have been learning. We then shared what we learned in our readings which added to the information we already had, and in addition, helped us in articulating ourselves to express our thoughts. Class models have been the most difficult for us so we had to find time to spend more time together working on them and I believe those times paid off. One of the problems we encountered as a group was our meeting place at the Newton building which closes early and is not available on Sundays.

We resolved this issue by contacting each other through Skype, Facebook, and email for us to update each other about the needed responsibilities because we were not always available to meet in person due to other responsibilities. The internet has been a great help for the meeting of our minds to complete our project. The experience has been to me like a roller coaster, but there have been so many things I have seen like my shortcomings with my responsibilities with my former group. Though things have indeed been going tough in my family and I was not able to concentrate on my studies, I now see that determination is an essential part of making a team work.

There have been some problems with my first group and I could have overlooked all those had I been stronger to face the challenges and demands of my studies and yet the experience helped me see my mistakes. I should have been grateful to be learning and improving my communication skill with my first group because they were all English but I overlooked that privilege. As I worked with my second group, I learned that being a team player and communicating is very important and this is what I will always remember when I will be working with a group again.

Moreover, comparing my experience with my study skills group, I could say that there is indeed no other way for the success of a group other than flowing with the group, working with them in unity, and always communicating with them.
