Jack Welch Jack Welch, the owner of GM, is a man of wealth and power. One in our society may wonder exactly how an individual is able to obtain bothin order to promote inner success in society. Some would argue that people are born with abilities that make them “more fit” for the environment, whereas others would argue that the environment and upbringing would affect later behavior and cognitions. Freud was a deterministic individual who was a medical doctor who specialized in the neurosciences.

Thus, he held a view that we are already programmed from birth with specific abilities and attributes that are not changeable and are uniform across human culture. For example, Freud would say that Jack Welch has specific abilities that he inherits from his biology. He stutters, which would be considered abnormal in today’s society. Thus, as a result this lays a genetic abnormality that is influencing the behavior of the individual. In addition, Freud would also comment on the number of divorces he had as the result of a problem in his psychosocial development, since Freud believed that humanity functioned on two principles alone: death and sex.

Because Jack Welch has shown that he is unable to keep stable relationships, this poses an interesting problem as far as diagnosing where the abnormality lies in his psychosocial skills. Erikson, who was a student of Freud’s, would argue that the environment and relationships shape a person more so than the deterministic biological view. Erikson would say that Welch was able to overcome a majority of the psychosocial stages of development, such as inferiority vs. industry because he was able to find a way to be a very productive member in society.

However, because he has had so many relationship problems, the comment could be made that there is neuroticism in the Intimacy vs. Isolation stage where he is unable to make a concrete relationship last a while. Therefore, this will impede him from moving on to the other stages of development or if he does move on, it will be a complication that will follow through the rest of the social development. Overall, Jack Welch is a healthy individual, with just a few abnormal characteristics. He has the leadership skills and psychological skills to run a multi-billion dollar industry, however his relationship problems and stutter could pose a view that he has some abnormally developed characteristics by societies standards.

This look at the humanistic technique allows for further abstraction with the individual by showing them their flaws and allowing them to make the judgments in order to correct the behavior. These techniques, however, do not provide a good look on validity and reliability in terms of clinical psychology because it is directed toward the personal experiences of the individual, which can be hard to quantify.
