Novel Study: Strange Heaven by Lynn Coady It’s not really a surprise that Bridget returns to her ‘’old ways’’, and sits on the front side listening to her family again. Bridget seems first depending financially on her family, and bringing up her child within family and by help of them. Then she actually does not have much choice, besides being young, and still listens to her parents, but also, they make her be aware of her problem, so she’s reasonable, and she understands, as well as feels, that she should give up drinking for her own sake. 2. The snowstorm at the end of the novel, symbolizes life, and rhythm of life.
It’s a symbol of determinism, and also of the fact that no one really escapes his/her fate, whatever it is. It symbolizes also, that this determinism includes our own options, on which our destiny is based. A whole circle of life is symbolized, in terms of rhythm, end of ‘’circle’’ is most of the times, like beginning of it. 3. I think that Coady finally made the right option in writing and narrating the story in the third person. The novel is such that a person could not describe some feelings and some experiences in the first person, talking directly about her.
A third person in this case, would be more ‘’objective’’ in describing feelings based on events, that a person would not dare confess about him/herself, such as guilt. Also, as many other persons are involved, and this is not actually an autobiography but a novel, then a single person would be more suitable in describing all these persons, their role, objectively, than rather talking in first person for herself only, and in the third person for all the others. 4. The theme of adoption, make clear that history is mostly repeated.
Parents, usually apply same tactics for their kids, the way that things have happened to them in life. They usually behave like their own parents had behaved towards them. Moreover, in this case, apart from this, there’s a necessity of adoption, though they both may feel guilty for this. These two people are not capable of raising their kid on their own. Circumstances have made this necessary. Since, they are not married, and live in separate, and don’t have financial resources for raising their child.
Besides all, both heroes seem to have too many personal problems that they have to solve, so there is no possibility for them, to be also charged with problems, of others, even of their own kid. 5. The chart of all protagonists, is based on Bridget’s attitude towards her problems, and they are ‘’all’’ responsible somehow, for her future. They all have influence on her behavior, attitude, and options, contributing, to her life style, her habits, her choice on adoption, and future. Their role is in direct link with Bridget’s life in all terms, and each one, participates in the final ‘’snowstorm’’ from his/her side.
All thi shows, that person are mostly social beings, connected to each other, and no one in society, or family which is a ‘’small society’’ is really independent, and each one, in society and environment may affect our life to a large extent, besides our own choices.
