[Meri Weiss] [English 1101] 12 May Increased escapist films production after 9/11 incident: This paper is primarily based on a largely significant and spoken topic concerning the film industry, which relates to the marked increase in the escapist films production in the aftermath of 9/11 incident. This phenomenal increase in the production of such films that are fraught with unreasonable violence, vehemence, and brutal bloodshed has increased not in America alone but this astounding trend is seen and recognized, globally.
Aggravated violence and captivating action play bound together and portrayed in escapist movies have gained immense popularity after 9/11 incident, while some people had opinioned that escapist film production would noticeably decrease after 9/11. The exhilarated type entertainment in the form of escapist films is highly sought by people all over the globe, not being exclusive to America alone. The adrenaline-inducing and emotion-stimulating escapist films are extremely capable of portraying and representing the particularly important 9/11 incident and the invasions made by America after that on Afghanistan and Iraq.
Not only that, many researchers and common people have reported that the 9/11 incident appeared to be based on significant cinematic imagination. The way the attack on the mighty World Trade Centre was planned, that plot seemed to be clearly representing some escapist films. Images taken by the cameras after the attack on towers in New York, seemed to be exactly similar to a high-budget Hollywood production. (MOVIES AND THE SECOND DAY OF INFAMY, n.d.). A large percentage of American public thought that the escapist film production will decrease after 9/11 incident owing to the oversensitivity and seemingly endless anxiety following the terrorist attacks.
The advertising trailers of the famous movie Spiderman were instantly removed from the internet, theatres, and various channels after the 9/11 terrorist attack. Many other movies in the cinemas were also either rescheduled or cancelled altogether. Mounting fear was easily recognizable in the movie-goers and so the people began thinking that the escapist film production will decrease in America. The trend of popularity seen for the escapist films is not without explanation. More and more people have been seen falling for the escapist films in the aftermath of 9/11 incident on the grounds of finding an escape from the 9/11’s non-fiction violence.
It is an established psychological fact that after any major catastrophe in one’s life, one finds oneself trapped in the reverberating memories of that incident. So, in an order to escape the dreadful memories of the 9/11 incident, people began to seek an action packed fantasist entertainment with which they could relate and eventually immerse in the film’s plot. So, largely as a means of coping mechanism, the Americans have been seeking entertainment in the form of escapist films after 9/11 incident.
It is not necessary for the escapist films to be particularly related to the 9/11 incident and portray what happened to the towers, rather people simply prefer them to be violent and packed with action. The portrayal of violence formed a critical issue for the film industry in America after 9/11, as people struggled towards the state of normality. Still, this is a fact that only after weeks of 9/11 incident, rentals of adventure-based movies increased in US and video stores reported higher sales of movies packed with explosions or disasters.
