6 May, The End of Suburbia Review: American dream is based on a peaceful luxuriouslife which is endangered by the rising environmental concerns all over the globe. In the contemporary age, people normally live in suburbs and be forgetful of the future of Earth while they consume. The post war wealth earned by USA was all invested in developing such a life style that is not sustainable. The movie directs audience’s attention towards readily depleting natural resources including gas and oil. If a collective effort is made to alter the environment unfriendly practices, it would cause upsets in the global political scenario.
The film reaches two important conclusions. First, it will take a lot of time and effort to come out of the energy crisis. The problem can not be solved quickly. Secondly, people doing their bit on individual level would hardly ever manage to make any difference. In order to take solid steps towards the solution of this problem, collective effort needs to be made on national as well as international level. Survival is only possible if Earth contains sufficient resources to meet the needs of humans.
In order to make sure it does, we had better become serious! I like that images in this movie have been chosen to intensify the alarming mood of the movie. While talking of massive fuel consumption, the clip shows dial machine with numbers rolling up too fast to be readable followed by a picture of the roads crowded with traffic. What I don’t like about the movie is that occasionally, voice of the speaker merges with the background effects and the audience can not clearly listen. I disagree with the statement made in the movie that “no amount of solar or wind or even nuclear is gonna allow us to continue living this way of life” (“The End of Suburbia”).
I disagree with this statement for two reasons. First, it negates the significance of things and facilities that are made available to the public through use of electricity, and secondly, it underestimates the power of solar, wind and nuclear energy. Electricity is our fundamental need. Whatever advancement has been made in the world so far has been made on the account of electricity. I fully agree with another statement made in the movie, “We have to grow electricity, or we will not grow economy” (“The End of Suburbia”).
I believe that while we blame electricity for causing global warming, we tend to overlook the numerous ways in which it has improved our standard of living. I have been listening quite a lot about unsustainable development since my childhood. So the movie has not done much to change my view of the world. However, the movie has influenced my view of my own life. Now, when I waste something, I tend to feel like a culprit, and feel obliged to seek pardon from the generations to come. It is indeed right, that we have done a lot of harm to Earth and our future generations may not remember us in good terms.
