Keeping our homes comfortable, taking a hot shower and enjoying the convenience and entertainment provided by electri are all things that we have come to expect each day. We recognize that these luxuries have become part and parcel of living in a developed, industrialized nation. We also know that all of these things have a price attached. Not only are our homes and electronic gadgets expensive technological wonders, the energy necessary to build and run them are expensive as well. As we consider the environmental impacts of our energy consumption, it becomes clear that the price tag for using this energy goes far beyond paying a monthly utility bill.
Energy conservation is important because it is good for the environment and good for your wallet. Many exciting developments have occurred in the study of energy conservation over the past few decades. This is especially true in the field of renewable energy. Renewable energy is so named because it comes from sources that will not be depleted over time. Solar, wind and geothermal energy are all considered renewable energy sources. Non-renewable sources are carbon-based fuel sources such as coal, oil and natural gas.
The shift towards using renewable energy resources for home needs is gaining momentum because it is less damaging to the environment and is becoming cost effective. All of us as members of the Home Owner’s Association can do some simple things to conserve energy. The first is to be sure that our homes are all insulated completely. This will ensure that heating and cooling systems are working to make homes comfortable, not trying to cool or heat outdoor air. The second thing we can do is to work on installing the most energy efficient appliances, furnaces and air conditioners.
These may be more expensive in up-front cost, but will pay themselves off over the years in energy savings. Finally, we can all begin to consider incorporating renewable energy resources in our home energy system. Photovoltaic solar panels and geothermal heating/cooling systems are readily installed and more affordable than ever before. A combination of these efforts can result in long-term savings and an improved environment. There are a number of local, state and federal incentives to introduce renewable energy sources to our homes.
There is currently a $1000 local tax rebate offered by the county for photovoltaic systems installed in the 2011 calendar year. In years past state and federal tax credits have been offered, but current budget shortfalls has put the efficacy of these programs in doubt. Conserving energy is the right thing to do for our environment and increasingly, for your personal finances. Many methods of conservation can be used, but ht e best will include the use of renewable energy resources, a focus on conserving through proper home insulation and the installation of energy efficient appliances.
