ment of Purpose: Shi’ite Insurgency in Yemen In examining contemporary international events, it is an inevitable part of inquiry that one should analyze the assumptions that give rise to ones opinions and beliefs. The three levels of analyses provide a framework for assumptions and allow the formation of a rational explanation of these events, such as the Shi’ite Insurgency in Yemen and the escalation to a international conflict. The Shi’ite Insurgency in Yemen and the escalation to international conflict can be explained in terms of the first level of analysis by examining on a microscopic level mans role in engendering such conflict through the political context in which an individual’s beliefs are formed, the unwillingness to alter belief doctrines, and the perceived international threat to ingrained doctrines and beliefs.

The Shi’ite Insurgency in Yemen began locally and escalated over the period from 2005 to 2009 to an international conflict involving many states ("Yemen-Timeline…”, 1). The international conflict first ensued when rebels invaded Saudi Arabia in 2009 ("Yemen Rebels…”, 1). In the midst of the conflict, the press has sent mixed messages involving United States actions (MGH, Dt, 1). Yemen and other involved states have also released conflicting statements that have contributed to the development of assumptions and beliefs in individuals that make up the society involved with the conflict.

Singer suggests in his review of the International Conflict: Three Levels of Analysis that optimists "[see] the cause of war in men, seek to change them" (Singer, 457). It has been suggested that the escalation of the Shi’ite Insurgency in Yemen was largely caused by just the opposite, the “established a pattern of playing off Islamists against Socialists” (McGregor, 1). This has contributed at fundamental level to the development of personal ideals that have contributed to the conflict.
