Should Australia accept refugees? By Presented to Should Australia accept Refugees? Australia is among the several Western countries with the highest number of refugees for the past several years. In fact, they have humanitarian programs for refugees. However, most Australians do not agree with the entry of refugees in their country. Reasons for this are varied. Nevertheless refugees should be accepted in Australia because they have the right for protection and they could contribute to the country’s strong economy.

To most Australians, they look at refugees as illegal. Most believe that since they do not have the legal papers permitting their stay, they should not be accepted. However, Australia should accept refugees for the reason that under the international law, every nation is required to provide protection to refugees. This reason is not only an application for humanitarian purpose but it is the obligation of each country to protect human rights. Refugees are entitled for their human rights too. They only flee their country to seek protection and security in other countries.

If there is a substantial ground of danger and torture of the refugees in their own country, they should not be returned back. Refugees are unwanted in Australia because they are a threat to Australia’s economy and employment. However, the study by Stevenson (2005) provides information that immigration, inflation and wages in Australia has no relationship. Economist found out that increased in the immigration does not affect employment. They further explained that wages and prices of commodities are not significantly affected with the inclusion of refugees.

Furthermore, refugees have the potential to enhance the population’s skill because they arrived with different skills and experience. Some are entrepreneurial and have the potential to generate employment. All of which are all contributory factors in the country’s economy.
