Whitman reflected all the richness of life in American his poems. “ leaves of Grass is highly praised by Connor. “ Behold in Leaves Of Grass the immense and absolute rise. It is all our own. The nation is in it. To understand Greece study Iliad and Odyssey. Study ‘The Leaves of Grass’ to understand America.’ The leaves of Grass’ is the epic of America” Whitman delights in giving us catalogues of the variety of professions followed in America. He does not shrink from picturing prostitutes and butchers. The whole wide range of the American physical scene is brought before us. He succeeded in conveying to the readers, a broad panoramic grasp of America‘s spaciousness, her opulence and her veritable and multitude ness of life. Whitman’s’ Song of Myself contains plenty of catalogues of characteristic phenomenon of America. In “A Song for Occupation ‘he praises the divine average. Thieves’ prostitutes and drunkards are regarded by the poet with as much sympathy and love. No human being is treated with content.

Being a strong humanist, he advocated female liberty and abolition of slavery. Whitman is still remembered for his strong advocacy for women’s rights and their role in the development of the States. Scholastic controversies are still at large as some claim that he was only trying to make females remember what their traditional role is, while others claim that he was a revolutionist who advocated the equality of men and women as a rule of nature, and also as something very vital for the society.
The poem ‘Song of Myself’ was written and published by Walt Whitman. The poem was first published in the 1855 edition of Whitman’s book ‘Leaves of Grass’. In the second edition of this book, Whitman renamed it (the book) as ‘Poem of Walt Whitman, an American’. So from the very beginning, Whitman’s attitude was to reflect on being an American.
The poem, “Song of Myself” was one of the untitled poems that were written by Walt Whitman. The poem was one of the brilliant displays because of the original themes innovative techniques that they use. The poem was in the lead position in the year 1856 and the edition was given its first title.

[Whitman, 1888; p. 311] The changing titles of the poem-no title in the first edition of Leaves of Grass in 1855, to "A Poem of Walt Whitman, an American" in 1856, to simply "Walt Whitman" in 1860 edition and finally "Song of Myself" in 1881-signify the growth of the meaning of the poem, contributing to his construction of the archetypical American identity.
Walt Whitman’s ‘Song of Myself,’ the free verse poetry in which he celebrates “Mother Nature” and “his own nature as a representative of all humankind in its endless variety” [Loving, p. XI] is considered Whitman’s best poetry, containing the “essence of nearly all his poems” published in 1855 edition of Leaves of Grass [Chase, 58].
