One of my life experiences Many philosophers and researchers have aimed to explain the true meaning andpurpose of life. Albert Einstein defined life as “in the middle of difficulty lies opportunity”. Along similar lines, I believe that life is about overcoming one’s problems by devising effective solutions. Only those people succeed in life who face their problems with perseverance and strength. One of the biggest problems that I have witnessed in my life has been my stuttering. It may seem to be irrelevant for most but the bearer of such a problem only knows how challenging it is to live with a stutter.
I began to stutter from the age of six. My habit affected my daily routine activities and had drained me off all of my confidence. It affected my school performance and presentation skills. Once, I was chosen by my teacher to give a presentation on my report. I could not even finish half of my presentation when I was asked to come down from the platform because I was stuttering very much and was being unclear in my speech. Such kind of embarrassments started making me avoid conversations with people and even answering the phone.
I had become very conscious about myself since I had to suffer humiliation very frequently due to my stutter. To avoid humiliation, I usually kept quiet in class discussions and different gatherings. These aspects were making me anti-social and isolated from the world. I had come to a point in life when I thought that I would never be able to live a normal and successful life. Around this time, something happened that changed my life forever. I went to an exhibition in Dubai that displayed inventions from new researchers.
The researchers and inventors had to present their ideas in front of hundreds of people. To my amazement, one of the presenters was stuttering while presenting his invention. Later, I met him to congratulate him on his success and in return, he gave me valuable advice. He stated that one has to be proud of his existence and convince himself that he can speak as well as the others. He also stressed on the need to possess courage and will power to overcome the stutter. I religiously followed his advice and made myself believe that I could speak fluently.
After repeated exercises and self therapy, I was able to gain some level of confidence and convince myself that I could speak as well as anyone. As a result, I and my friend gave a convincing presentation on our graduation report in front of my classmates, teachers and counselors. He stood next to me and filled in the words whenever he got a feeling that I was about to stutter. During the presentation, I began speaking fluently since I had the confidence that my friend would help me in case of any unintentional pauses from my side.
This resulted in the eradication of my problem and helped me to live my life as a confident person. Those years of my stuttering made me learn a valuable lesson in life which is that one should always have complete confidence on himself. One should aim to overcome the weaknesses with will power and commitment. If an individual is persistent about the attainment of a goal then he shall surely succeed in his endeavors.
