From a succinct summarization to probable benefits and the gist of the book’s content, the paper is more like an abstract or preview of the books than a research or analytic paper. As such, the paper does not come in handy for people who wish to gain deeper insights into information systems and their implications in business scenarios.
For this purpose, they can get well-informed through the books mentioned in the paper. Regarding the books reviewed, it can be said that they are reliable and must be containing valuable material on data mining, CRM (Customer Relationship Management), IT, and BPR (Business process reengineering). The publication houses of these books are McGraw Hill and Prentice Hall which itself signify the quality and authenticity of the content. The author has also reviewed contemporary books which show that the author keeps in touch with the latest know-how of the business market.
The paper is a very good descriptive piece in terms of definition and concept building. Benefits are properly defined and explained in each scenario but the author lacks in adopting a critical approach to review and delivers mostly positives of all. There are no shortcomings defined or challenges mentioned which weaken the purpose of the paper as a complete review of the books. Everything can be found in the books but when the author is reviewing them, he should also discuss the disadvantages covered by books’ authors to present a complete picture of the concepts and their applications.
He further fails to identify the sectors or industries which can make use of such information systems. He talks of data mining and warehousing and lists their benefits, but did not give any sound application of this tool in any of the insurance, banking, or other industry to let the reader know and understand why to refer to the book. Readers generally prefer a book that contains an optimum mix of theory and practical approaches. Theoretical aspects have been well covered but no space has been given to the real-time applications of such tools in business scenarios which could encourage the reader to look for these books and read them.
This fails the purpose of book reviewing to a certain extent. All in all, the paper is written in a very coherent manner with the use of simple English and bullets to highlight the major points and benefits of each. The paper is well-categorized also which does not create any confusion regarding the discussion of topics. However, only the pros have been talked about in the paper, leaving the cons entirely. The paper could have been made better if it analyzed the challenges. The paper was written in the year 2001 and it could have gained more relevance today also if it incorporated some pitfalls and future threats.
Then it would have been easier to correlate it to the present times and judge how beneficial these tools have been to businesses in general.
