Challenges with Managing a Multigenerational Workplace Modern workforce is characterized by age-cultural diversity more than ever before. Many organizations consider this diversity as one of the competitive advantages of their business operations. On the other hand, some are of the opinion that multigenerational feature would only impede the sustainable growth of an organization. Regardless of the prose and corns, there are some common challenges that every entrepreneur/manager must meet while dealing with a multigenerational workforce.

To begin with, emotional barrier is one of the major challenges with a multigenerational group. Since each group is characterized by age-based traits, people’s professional outlook would vary. This perceptional variance would cause emotional conflicts between these age groups. Elders find themselves most deserving segment for their loyalty and experience whereas youngsters for their competitiveness and expertise. Yet some others often complain that new generation is little concerned about professional ethics.

Another problem with managing multigenerational group is that individuals with different age traits require different motivational strategies and training programs. Although aged workers with long term working experience constitute a potential asset to the organization, their adaptability to changing business environments and technology is comparatively poor. Moreover, they cannot be assigned to jobs that require higher physical fitness. At the same time, a manager dealing with younger generation also confront with some constraints.

For instance, youngsters require training and guidance on every area of the job. It will take managers to understand the new employees and their interests. The new recruits will also take some time to comprehend the culture of the organization as well as the nature of their job. Therefore, it will impede the overall function of the business and will cause financial loss with regard to training and recruitment. In a multigenerational setting, the HR manager has to design different sets of promotional strategies and work-approach.

Meantime, he must keep the major focus on creating a peaceful ambiance that would enhance teamwork and organizational cohesion. In short, the success of a manager lies with his ability to align different age groups toward the common goal by giving them opportunities for interaction and teamwork.
