Few can deny that America is a fascinating subject, both for those who live in it as citizens and those foreigners who dream of one day visiting its vast and beautiful shores.

America is one of the oldest countries in existence, and one with a great many accomplishments. Even knowing where to begin describing it can be difficult due to its wide-ranging variety. To begin with, America was born from a revolution. In 1776, the American Revolution began (Zinn, 32). This was in large part a tax revolt. English settlers in the coastal states were unhappy with the British government's attitude towards them. They overthrew their masters and created a new country with a new constitution.

They wanted more rights for ordinary people. They wanted freedom of speech and separation of church and state. Over the next few decades America grew. It faced perhaps its greatest trials under the presidency of Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. This war occurred between North and South. This was a war about slavery, which was practised in the South. It was a bloody war, but eventually the North won. Slavery was abolished. During the 20th century America grew in size and power. It fought in many wars and usually won.

Today, it has the largest economy in the world and a large population. Its culture is exported around the world. Some people dislike it, but many more love it. America's geography varies because the country is so huge. It hosts the Rocky Mountains and the forests of New England and the plains of the Midwest. The geographical features are diverse (Birdsall, 5). It is hard to describe so various a country. There are cities throughout the great land, many with their own unique cultures and ways of life.

Likewise, the ethnic make-up of the country is very diverse. To a large extent, America is a nation of immigrants. It was built on the hard work of people who came to it seeking a better life. There are Asians, Africans, Hispanics, and many more groups who live together in harmony. The current president, Barack Obama, is a man whose mother was Caucasian and whose father was African. In a way, he is a symbol of how Americans often get beyond colour and creed and look at the character or merit of a man or woman.

America is a strong military power with one of largest armed forces in the world. The military plays an important role in American life, and most Americans are very proud of their fighting men and women. However, the wars that America fights sometimes cause controversy. Current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have created some bad feeling between America and its allies. These wars were launched in response to terrorist attacks in recent years by enemies of the United States. America is a massive and diverse country.

It is often at the forefront of world affairs and engaged in important activities. Few can argue that it is a force for good in the world. It promotes human right, freedom, and democracy.
