Globalization and Morality Introduction Different scholars and the world have viewed globalization differently in general. Some have chosen to embrace it and the things that follow it, while others have disapproved it because of their many reasons including refusing modernization. With time, people have learnt the many benefits that globalization has brought, from the improvement of the relationship among countries to improvement of the transport sectors in various countries. It has enabled the development of countries that were termed as third-world and second-world ones to be of a higher level. Globalization has brought the much-needed change. Robert Wright defined globalization as the control of America’s political and economic empowerment. Through globalization, individual have more wealth and are freer than they were many years ago when they were still fighting to gain that much-needed freedom (Wright 1). Globalization, according to Wright, was the spreading of values and beliefs across the borders of America, and that it had started way before the advanced technological development began. According to Wright, globalization has come with many disadvantages in that the use of communication devices such as phones has helped terrorist commit crimes. The terrorists have become more organized and more dangerous since they can use these communication devices to organize attacks and converse among themselves. He says that the terrorists have used the Internet to their own advantage, and it is due to this globalization that terrorists have based their reasons for their attacks (Wright 2). It is also through this same process that the weapons they are using are more complicated and lethal. Wright argues that globalization has brought the act of crime to another level. Wrights also says that globalization is a damaging existence. It is damaging because the United States is a country that is depended – to aid its economic growth – on the process of globalization, and this, according to Wright, is what makes the process of globalization damaging to America. Wright argues that globalization has connected many countries together, and that the United States is the leading country in terms of revolution. He states that America is a natural of revolution, and by this he means that America’s morality rate is the highest. He believes that it is the moral revolution that prevents America from becoming the downfall of globalization. Wright feels that globalization was the start of something that was uncontrollable. He fears that the stability that the United States is looking to accomplish with the process of globalization will not be achieved since there are still terrorist attacks that hinder such development. He says that it is through globalization that there is the availability of new weapons, new methods of crime, and there is the free movement of goods and services (Wright 2). Though globalization is a means to procure moral knowledge and usefulness, Wright thinks that globalization has brought tension among countries, particularly the United States and the Islamic community. Wright argues that with globalization, social class has emerged and there has been the rise of racism. The only way that individuals can coexist peacefully without harming each other is when liberty and security are combined. Only then will people live peacefully. The choice on whether globalization will make or break individuals and America is in the people’s hands (Wright 1). According to Kaplan, globalization is the main cause of development in the world. Globalization is about becoming modern, urbanized and free. He argues that development leads to evolution and that poverty derails the course that is the goal for development. He claims that the revolutions that were in Mexico and France were followed by economic growth and development, the rise in population due to this revolution and urbanization. His vision is that countries such as Brazil, China and Indonesia will be more economically able and that this will not be the case in the West, as there is bound to be unsteadiness. Kaplan argues that globalization has brought about the much-needed change that is urbanization of the Islamic community. He gives an example of the Islamic women. Before when they were living in the villages, they did not see the need to put on their veils since all the men that were present in those villages were related to them in one way or another (Wright 2). This meant that the prospect of an Islamic man marrying a woman from the village would be a violation of belief. With the coming of globalization, people migrated to cities in order to live in a modern way. These cities at the time were a mess, with there being overcrowding and the lack of necessities such as lavatories and sewer drainages. With the migration of the Islamic people from the villages, there came the wearing of veils since they had entered another area of residence where there were new faces everywhere. Wearing of veils, according to Kaplan, is the result of globalization and urbanization. The Muslims migrated to other areas in the West and here they became unknown. Such countries include Cairo, the capital of Egypt. Even though these countries are poor, including Tunis and Damascus, and do not have the best security in town, the crime rate, compared to the developed countries, is very low or none at all. This is because unlike the globally developed countries, the abovementioned have a stronger backbone for religion (Wright 1). He argues that with religion, there can be a more intense level of development and change. Democracy and globalization should not be confused with each other as they both mean different things. According to Wright, morality is an aspect that the whole world needs to work on if people are to live in harmony and peace. Morality is an absolute factor that should be considered, for it is through this that harmony will prevail. Moral change needs to align with the advance in technology. He argues that for acts such as terrorism to end, the Islamic communities’ needs should be considered. People should not be selfish and look at their own interests. Moral change is required in America, as it is this kind of transformation that will lead to the empowerment of the State in general. Wright argues that in order to make others pleased, an individual should put oneself in other person’s situation and try to look at the world from their perspective. Only then will they be able to understand morality (Wright 1). Human nature changes with the changes in the environment and development. Kaplan agrees with this since he states that the world revolves around change. Development revolves around peoples’ attitudes, and the only way for development to be successful is by co-operation of people. Kipling’s view of human nature supports Kaplan since both argue how human nature changes with time in accordance with how they are living and how times change. It is in human nature to want to adapt to the changes that happen in day-to-day life, and these changes are what makes the world revolve (Wright 2). Conclusion Globalization should be embraced since it is through globalization that there has been significant improvement of certain countries, with most climbing up the social and economic ladder. Though it has its shortcomings, with the coming up of weapons of mass destruction and their easy market due to contact among countries, globalization is the main source of world wealth, empowerment and unification. Countries that were in the past viewed as low class ones have been able to emerge as more successful and more able in terms of advancement and improvement. It is through globalization that there has been international trade, which has brought about the variety of goods and services. There have been population increase, improved infrastructure and better facilities. There has also been advancement in technology, in the agricultural sector, economic rise and urbanization. Speaking about the shortcomings, it has also brought about the rise in crimes such as bomb terrorists, bioterrorists and the mass destruction terrorists who sabotage nuclear facilities. With the advantages and the shortcomings, globalization has already made a mark globally, and it should be embraced.
