?Autobiography Dedication: This autobiography is dedicated to my mother, who helped me to realize the importance of human life, who taught me how to be self-reliant and self-confident, how to dream about a better life, and how to search for new opportunities in life. Acknowledgements: I thank all those who extended their helping hands towards me while I compile my autobiography, especially my parents, brothers, teachers, friends, co-workers and well-wishers. Foreword: The reason for writing this autobiography is to assess my life and to plan my future. Besides, I hope that my autobiography will be helpful for those who are ready to follow their dreams and to make use of each and every opportunity in life. Introduction Some people say that life is full of happiness and one must be enthusiastic towards life. But some others say that life is not that much easy and one must be cautious about the unexpected problems in life. When I was a child, I got confused because some were optimistic and some others were pessimistic towards life. Once, I discussed this problem with my mother. She pointed out that this difference was due to one’s outlook on life because pessimistic people provide importance to the darker side of life and the optimistic people provide importance to the brighter side of life. Then, I came to realize the fact that one need not grumble on one’s personal problems. Instead, one must try to find out an apt solution to overcome one’s personal problems. This is the most important lesson taught by my mother and it deeply influenced the course of my life. About my family and me Do you consider 1987 as an important year in the calendar? I guess 1987 may be an unimportant year for you. But for me, 1987 is the most important year in my life. To be specific, I my parents heard my first cry in 1987, the exact date, April, 21. My ancestry is deeply rooted in Dominican Republic, where I spent my childhood years. I need to provide a clearer picture of my native place. The City of Santiago is my exact birthplace. My city belongs to the northern part of my motherland. Brown (1999) states that, “Santiago de los Treinta Caballeros (“The Town of Thirty Gentlemen”), commonly referred to simply as Santiago, was initially founded in 1498 by Columbus who built a fort on a hill bordering the Yaque River” (p.10). I feel so proud of my native place (city) because it is generally considered as a cultural hub in Dominican Republic. Besides, this city provides ample importance for industrial development. If you happen to visit my city, you can see a number of industries based upon leather goods, especially, shoes and other type of apparels. Another importance of my city is that it is surrounded by a number of mountains which act the role of a natural barrier against natural calamities. Besides, my city is rich in natural resources, especially dense forests. Coming back to the point, my parents are blessed by three children, Jairon Fortuna (my older brother), Victor Fortuna Jr. (my younger brother), and me. My father’s name is Victor Fortuna, and my mother’s name is Elida Pacheco. So, my childhood with my parents and my brothers is most memorable because I can recollect each and every incident happened during my childhood. My life in Dominican Republic My life in City of Santiago, Dominican Republic, was enriched by pre-school memories. One can see that pre-school (Kindergarten) life is so special for a child who is so enthusiastic towards learning new things. I considered learning as a natural phenomenon in human life and this attitude helped me a lot to be a successful student. For instance, my school life at the Luz Y Vida School in the City of Santiago proved to be successful and memorable. Besides, I did not consider the process of studying as a burden and tiresome effort. This attitude towards school education helped me to gain acceptance from my teachers and friends. The end result was two awards, one for perfect attendance and another for good behavior at school. Later in 1997, my family moved to Puerto Rico and I continued my education at another school. During the years in Puerto Rico, I did complete my pre-technical middle school education. Then, my family took an important decision which changed my life, the decision to immigrate to Boston, Massachusetts. This decision helped a lot to explore the possibilities of life. Our life in Massachusetts September 3, 2001 is another memorable day in my life. On that day, my family got settled in South End, Massachusetts. Hereafter, my life did undergo rapid transformation. I was aware of the fact that I need to change my attitude towards others and try my level best to be acceptable in our host nation. If I try to shrink myself into my private domain, I will lose my space in the public domain. So, I got admission at the Charlestown High School and completed my first two years of high school education. Later, I got transferred to Brighton High School, and this helped me to be a successful graduate in the year 2005. At this school, I was able to receive my High School Diploma. Then, I became more conscious about my career in future. I think, the best possible way for an individual to be successful in one’s life is to choose one’s private interest as future career. So, I decided to search for the best college which suits my personal and career interests. At last, I came to know that Massachusetts Bay Community College in Wellesley Hills, MA, is the best college which suits my personal and career interests. I got admission at that college and continued my education. Before graduation, I did have a vague idea on my future career. But now, I feel confident that graduate education helped me to focus on my future goals. How I got interested in psychology From my preschool days itself, I used to listen to the elders. Then, the elders used to warn me that I must not try to overhear the conversations among them. Once, my mother told me that I must try to mingle with my friends. Then, I asked her that why the elders are not ready to consider me as their friend. She answered the world of the elders is different and my duty is to obey her orders. So, I decided to obey her. But the topic of human mind and difference in behavior was an unresolved mystery for me. Later, when I was a graduate student, I came to realize that my private interest and career interest is same, psychology. Now, I can say with confidence that psychology can help me to be successful in future life. Besides, I feel so proud to be the first graduate in our family. Within this context, my mother is my guiding star, who guided me towards my destination. One can see that human life is a perfect blend of happiness and sorrow. My life is not so different from others. For example, a medical condition (say, last two years) in my life restricted me from learning more about psychology or from having higher studies in this field. But this personal problem (medical condition) helped me to deal the same with much more ease. Now I realize the fact that time cannot hinder us from pursuing our dreams. To be specific, hindrances in personal life is like a stimulant to me, which accelerates my effort to be successful in future. Self evaluation I consider that I am responsible for my deeds in my life. If we provide ample importance to our responsibilities, success will follow us. When a problem occurs in my life, I used to consider the same as an opportunity to prove myself as individual who can overcome personal problems. Besides, I am so optimistic and I realize the fact hardships are momentary in human life. My motto is that one must learn from one’s past, live in the present moment, and must be optimistic about future. As pointed out earlier, my mother is the one and only source of my inspiration and optimism. Her guidance helped me a lot to fight against the odds in my life. Besides, I do not consider that keeping innumerable number of friends leads one towards social acceptance. I have a few friends, but they are so close to me and I can depend upon them. On the other side, I am aware of the fact that decision making is an essential quality which leads one towards success. Now, I am an employee at a day care centre. As pointed out earlier, my interest in psychology is most helpful to deal with children who are under four years. Besides, I extend my help towards different families (I am working as a nanny/ tutor (Spanish)). Among those families, I consider my service at John Henry’s (say, the owner of Red Sox Boston baseball league) family as important. My future plan is to open a Bilingual Child Care Center, within the city of Boston. My associate in Child Development (2011) and other certificates in the field of child psychology prove that I am an apt person in this field because my personal interest and career goal is same. Conclusion So, human life is not filled with full of misfortunes, but a mixture of hope, twists and turns. One cannot predict what waits in the darker corners and what surprises are awaiting us in the future. My life proves that one need to be responsible towards one’s deeds and grab each end every opportunity in life. If we miss an opportunity, it is missed forever; we will be in the closed end of life. On the other side, if one is ready to consider problems as challenges, there exists high scope for the successful fulfillment of one’s dreams. This is the basic lesson which I learned from my past. I am aware of the fact that I must be cautious about my duties towards the society and my responsibilities towards my fellow beings. In short, the realization of my strengths and limitations will be helpful for me to attain success and I feel confident that my future will be bright. References Brown, I. Z. (1999).
