It ensures that the hospital outcomes and experiences of the elderly are improved. NICHE organizations have, therefore, ensured that the geriatric care environment is improved through the use of project and evaluation management tools; family, patient, and staff education programs; and guidelines that enhance evidence-based practice. The most important step in improving the healthcare of the mature citizens in the society is through evaluating the geriatric care environment. In addition, the readiness of the organization to adopt the evidence-based geriatric care is critical on improving the health of the older adults in the society (Paulo de Almeida Tavares et al., 2013). NICHE hospitals use the Geriatric Institutional Assessment Profile (GIAP) instrument to evaluate the recommended treatment applications and the geriatric syndromes knowledge. It also helps evaluate the relevance of the hospital’s organizational attributes to the geriatric care. The GIAP us a self-report survey instrument made of 152 items and entails professional and demographic information. It also has got eight main scales: a Geriatric Nursing Attitudes/ Knowledge Scale, six sub-scales that measure professional issues, and perception of the Geriatric Care Environment (GCE). 2.0 Objectives of the Study The qualitative research study aims to mainly determine the geriatric nursing environment. In specific, the study aims to evaluate the link between the implementation of evidence-based practices and sustainable nurse practice environment. It also seeks to analyse the main principles of NICHE programs that define a sustainable environment of geriatric nursing. 3.0 Method 3.1 Design The systematic review took consideration of the qualitative information used in the studies through the use of methodological approaches like case study, grounded theory, exploratory descriptive, naturalistic enquiry, hermeneutics, and phenomenology. 3.2 Inclusion and Exclusion Criteria The eligibility criteria of the studies were: first, they were to be peer reviewed journal articles. Second, the articles were to focus mainly on the geriatric nursing. Lastly, the studies used were recent ones to ensure up to date findings are reviewed. Studies were excluded only based on their year of publication. In explanation, the study ensured that the articles were latest and not older than 5 years upon publication. 3.3 Retrieval Processes The literature research was based on the published English language journal articles. The keywords used during the search were geriatric nursing and geriatric nursing environment. The databases searched include CINAHL, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, and JSTOR. The total number of relevant articles searched was approximately 15. Based on their abstracts, 10 studies of the studies were excluded due to their year of publication. 4.0 Results Study Methods Participants Results Notes Paulo de Almeida Tavares et al.(2013) The data was mainly quantitative. It was collected using surveys based on the NICHE program items. Confirmatory and exploratory analysis was conducted. In addition, exploratory factor analysis was conducted. The total number of successful participants in the study was 1,173 people. However, the analysed questionnaires were 1,068 registered nurses. The four factors that emerged after exploratory factor analysis were: continuity of care, institutional values regarding staff and older adults, age-sensitive care delivery, and resource availability. The Geriatric Care Environment Scale among the 1,068 registered nurses had an internal consistency of about 0.919. The scale was linked to a number of variables: the burden in taking care of older adults, rewarding, difficulty, staff knowledge, registered nurses perception of the education in the hospital, unit type, and hospital type. - The response rate of the study was 51.7%. - Registered nurses are the participants. The participants that engaged in long-term care showed greater satisfaction compared with those in acute facilities with the geriatric quality care. - Practical nurses and registered nurses are the participants. Booker (2015) Service learning method was used to conduct the study. The lessons were learnt through casual conservation and observation with the practicing nurses, faculty, and nursing students. It is important to understand the culture, values, and practices of the patients in any given area. -Service learning is a common practice in geriatrics and intergenerational gerontology. McKenzie et al. (2011) The study was conducted through a survey. The surveys were conducted on two tertiary, four community, and two geriatric-chronic care hospitals. A total of 1,189 registered nurses completed the survey. The nurses in community hospitals were less positive when it comes to nurse environment of geriatric practicing. Nurses in tertiary hospitals were more positive compared to those in the community hospital based on resource availability and institutional values but not collaboration capacity. Geriatric-chronic care hospitals were the most positive. The study was a comparison of types of hospitals in urban centres in Midwestern Canadian Province. 5.0 Discussion All the five article focus on geriatric nursing. Three of the studies were conducted through surveys. One of the studies was discursive while the other was conducted using service learning method. The participants in the surveys were registered nurses, practicing nurses, faculty, and student nurses. According to Paulo de Almeida Tavares et al. (2013), the main factors to be considered in the geriatric nurse environment are continuity of care, institutional values regarding staff and older adults, age-sensitive care delivery, and resource availability. Continuity of care ensures that the elderly gets regular health services. On the other hand, institutional values regarding the staff ensure that there are no malpractices among the nurses. Age sensitive care delivery is one that pays closer attention to patients of all ages including the elderly in the society. Lastly, there should be resources that will ensure that the appropriate health services are issued to the patients. Capezuti et al. (2012) argues that NICHE is the most successful method of recruiting members of the hospital. It is also the most suitable in practicing geriatric nursing. In explanation, NICHE is the most successful in contributing to the comprehensive geriatric programming in hospitals. It works to ensure that the senior citizens of age above 64 receive health care that enhances dignity, autonomy, and function. NICHE is the most comprehensive nurse program that focuses on addressing the needs of the older adults. It provides education, tools, and principles that support the healthcare system in achieving and transforming a healthcare service that focuses on the patients. Barba, Hu, and Efird (2012) argues that long-term care of the older patients have proven to be more satisfactory than the acute care. However, healthcare services for the elderly should not be static but rather context specific. It is important to understand the culture, values, and practices of the patients in any given area (Booker, 2015). The working environment can play a critical role in determining the attitude of nurses of taking care of the elderly (McKenzie et al., 2011). 6.0 Conclusion The five peer review articles that were analysed focused on geriatric nursing. Geriatric nurses aim at helping the elderly patients who are in greater risks of diseases and injuries. Some of the diseases that can affect such elderly group include cancer, Alzheimer and osteoporosis. As a result, the geriatric nurses’ main goal should be on preventive care. The nurses do not only help the patients but also the family to enable them cope with the medical conditions that the elderly people might develop in their older age. The geriatric nurses, however, need an ample working environment. Such environment can be in the hospital or nursing homes that have healthcare facilities. The scenario, therefore, makes the working environment of the geriatric nurses to be very critical in ensuring that the elderly in the society receives the best of the health services.
