Factors that cause obesity are complex, and it usually occurs if the intake of calories is more than the amount of energy one burns. The factors are usually a combination of environmental, genetic, and psychological factors.GenesFrom studies, it is shown that obesity runs in the family through genes. The family members also share foods and lifestyle habits, which are likely to contribute to obesity. Lifestyle habits are hard to separate from one's genetics.Environmental factorsOne's environment including the food that one eats and the relative activity also play a significant part in contributing to obesity.

Foods that have high-fat content increase the risks of obesity. One can lose weight by taking nutritious diets with low fats, engaging in physical exercises, and reducing the portion sizes.Psychological factorsPsychological factors including sadness, boredom, anger, and other negative emotions in most people's eating habits. Overweight people are likely to experience elevated psychological disturbances more than people with normal weight, and thus they tend to eat more food, which increases the chances of being obese.
