Here the attempt is made to describe the computer system used by me in the nursing room in a detailed manner. The computer used and its accompanying software and devices makes an important issue in studying procedure of a class room. Here I have notified that, the laptop used by me is Dell Inspiron 14Z and the operating system used is Windows 7. It is also mentioned her that input devices like mouse, headphone and printer is used by me to make computer operation easier for me. I have also mentioned about the anticipated software which will be used by me, that is Microsoft word and power point. Apart from this the ergonomics and work space is highlighted to ensure the health and safety of mine while using the laptop. Topic : Computer System and Workspace Introduction Here the main aim of the essay is to detail about the computer system used by me in the class and explaining some intricate facts about it. As everyone knows, computer has a major role to play in any class room atmosphere, as it aids the student enormously in any study procedure. In today’s technically advanced world, computer has an inevitable role to play. Computer helps a student in storing all the information related to the studies and it also helps in fast retrieving of the information stored. Nowadays, a computer comes in all shapes and sizes and a student has to understand his requirements when purchasing a computer. Normally as a student, one requires a computer with light configuration as all he would be doing is storing information, accessing web and working on various study subjects and projects. Along with the computer brand, the category of the computer used will be discussed in order to get a clear picture about the nature of the computer. Usually, the computer brand tells about the quality of the computer and the reliability one can place on it. As per (Scholastic,2011) “There are several computer manufacturers and brands that provide you with a range of laptops, however the major hurdle is to choose the right one”. Here there is also a brief discussion about the operating system used by the computer, and the peripherals included in it. Moreover there is explanation about the input device, software and ergonomics detail of the computer. Brand of the computer :The brand of the computer used by me is Dell, and it is the most renowned computer on international platform for study related use. I have chosen this brand because it has the configuration needed by me. I as a student, need more price compatible computer wherein I can get maximum usage facility and cost efficiency. Dell is a renowned brand and has a series of model to choose from, which persuaded me to buy this brand more than anything. Moreover, Dell has customer support throughout world which will enable me to access service even if I am outside my home town. It is also a fact that, Dell computers are the one manufacturer, which has launched specific models of laptop, exclusively for college students. According to (Grant,2012) ”Best Buy and Dell are among the companies that already announced their lineup of computer deals for college-bound students”. I have also found that, Dell is the best brand for students after experiencing its workability. The Category of Laptop – Inspiron 14Z – ultrabook :The category of computer I possess is the 0.8” thin inspiron 14z Ultra book. It has 3rd Gen Intel core processor which aids in fast processing .It also has processor powered into a design of ultra mobile fashion. The benefit of possessing this computer is that, it is travel friendly and it has 1” thin clear high definition display and DVD-RW. The processor has the capacity of 2.6GHZ and the laptop has a slim and sleek outlook which adds to my classy personality. My classy laptop cannot be categorized as a typical one, as it is an ultra book with 21mm thin , extra powerful long battery life which boots in seconds of time. Moreover a DVD drive which is of built in nature gives extra feature to my laptop. Additionally, the laptop operates on windows 7, which give extra confidence for me to work on as it is exceptionally new in technology. My laptop also got 8 GB memory feature which add onto its workability and information storage facility. Operating system The operating system used by me is “windows 7”, which is the latest one launched by Microsoft Corporation. This is ideal for laptops which are for home use or business use ,and is also a best option for college going students. Window 7 has the quality of having compatibility with any application and hardware. This allows me to work swiftly and safely on computer and adds to the quality of work and study performed by me. An operating system is the most important part of a computer and I believe that windows 7 is effective and efficient one to work with. As per (Franklin & Coustan,2011)“The operating system (OS) is the first thing loaded onto the computer -- without the operating system, a computer is useless”. Input devices A computer solely with CPU will not be able to perform functions needed by a user. There are many input devices or peripherals needed by a laptop in order to work effectively. Some of the input devices used in my laptop are mouse, headphone and printer. Usually desktops need several other input devices which are not usually needed by laptop. My laptop has mouse which needs to be used incase my keyboard lacks to function. Headphones are used to communicate with others through audio and video medium. I also use printer, so that I can print out any study material without much effort. Secondary Storage Device The computer in order to perform efficiently needs the facility of Random Access Memory which grasps the data as soon as the computer is switched on. However a computer cannot solely survive on the RAM and hence it needs the use of secondary storage devices. Here, hard disk is the main data storage secondary device used by my laptop apart from CD-Rom. I most often use my hard disk memory and use CD – Rom only on less often basis. The hard disk I have support 4 GB memory and it gives ample space for me to store information. As per (Brain,2012)“Nearly every desktop computer and server in use today contains one or more hard-disk drives. The hard disks give computers the ability to remember things when the power goes out”. Even though my hard disk has 4GB memory space, I use only half of it as I am a student. Computer System Peripherals The following are the computer system peripherals used by me. i)Mouse ; Mouse is one of the computer peripheral used by me in case the keyboard of my laptop is not in use. The mouse I have is of the brand Logitech M515 and is wireless. ii)Headphones : Headphones are definitely used by me ,when I am in operation with my laptop. The headphone I use is Grado SR60 which is flexible with soft vinyl head band. iii)Printer: My printer is Epson and model is L100 inkjet printer which helps me to produce quality and reliable printouts which is related to my study. Software anticipated to be used in class As my laptop posses Windows 7, which is the latest version of operating system launched by Microsoft Corporation, things will work out easier for me. As per (Hall,2012)“Microsoft Office is a software program commonly required by nursing programs, since Microsoft Word is used to complete papers and Microsoft PowerPoint for presentations”. Since windows have Microsoft word and power point application, I anticipate that Windows Microsoft program will be the most used software in my class. Ergonomics of a computer work space Ergonomics of a computer work space refers to the nature of working environment held by the user in order to safeguard his health and well being. As I don’t want to get victimized to spinal problems I chose a comfortable chair in which I can be seated with ease .Since laptop are designed in a way it created problems to health, ergonomically it is correct to use table which is of proper height and width. I believe, it is also ergonomically correct to use chair with proper cushion so that the sitting area of the body do not go numb. Thing I would like to change is to use wider chair as I am of larger body frame and healthy weight. Conclusion A computer whether it is laptop or desktop is of great importance in the life of a student. Since the world now is largely depending more on laptops, the life of the people , whether it is a student or a business entity has changed enormously in decades. As I am a nursing student, I require laptop which is compatible with the requirement of the course I am studying. As a nursing student, I am required to work more on Microsoft word and power point application .For me it is possible fast to work on my laptop, as it is of Dell Inspiron ultrabook 14z brand. My laptop is brand new, as I wanted latest applications and software to work on in my classroom. Apart from the sophisticated ultra book laptop, I have other secondary aspects to concentrate on like the category of the computer, operating system, input device and peripherals, software to be used in the class and ergonomics of the work space. Here, the laptop and its operating system form the basis for workability in a nursing class environment. Along with it, the input device and secondary storage device of my laptop helps me in studying the nursing course in an effective and efficient manner. Apart from this, the anticipated software which will be used more in the nursing class is projected as Microsoft word and power point. Moreover the ergonomics of the computer work space defines the health conscious working process of the user. References Brain, M. (2012). How Hard Disks Work. In howstuffworks.com.
