Contemporary Nursing Theories: Roy Adaptation Theory
Contemporary Nursing Theory
Some of the contemporary nursing theories include Roy adaptation theory, which identifies the human body as an open system interacting with external factors of stimuli. The theory presents four models of responses to environmental stimuli, which require attention during nursing intervention; self-concept group identity, physiological-physical, role function and interdependence. Watson's Human Caring Theory outline that caring is the unifying focus of nursing practice. It entails human science orientation to human caring process and experience (Plummer and Molzahn, 2009). Orem's general theory states that nursing is a product of three theories that are interrelated. They include self-care, self-care deficit and nursing systems. This theory holds that individuals can take care of themselves to maintain and promote their wellbeing. These and many others provide adequate guidelines for nursing (Plummer and Molzahn, 2009).
The contemporary nursing theories underscore nursing as a profession by providing guidance and direction especially in the structuring of nursing practice, research, and education. The theories help nurses to understand effective ways of undertaking nursing assessment, evaluation and appropriate intervention (Plummer and Molzahn, 2009). Nursing is made more efficient when there is reliable and valid health data of a patient. These theories provide the rationale and guidelines for accomplishing that. Ascertaining the quality of healthcare is important in as far as nursing is concerned. Contemporary theories help by providing criteria for measuring the quality. The four primary meta-paradigms of nursing include a person, environment, health, and nursing. The nursing theories provide the framework for nursing research that best understands how to relate the four concepts for better nursing care (Plummer and Molzahn, 2009).
In my healthcare setting, all the above factors apply and, contemporary theories and models directly shape my practice as a nurse. They provide the essential knowledge in the profession for active modern nursing. Without them, it would be difficult to understand my nursing practice as a profession.

...The Concept of Health and Illness in Two Nursing Theories Health is defined in by health care professionals and other ities in the field as the state of absence or presence of injury or illness on a human body whether physical, mental or spiritual. However, health can also be used in many other different contexts such as in family, community, population and environmental health. All of which require at least a basic delineation of health and illness as the two almost always come together when discussed (Bultemeier et al., 1998). Most nursing theories are based in one of the core concepts of health and illness where the whole gamut of well-being and caring originate. This is fundamental since nursing theories are derived from models...

... reasons for the loophole in today's nursing. III. Hospital norms and etiquette One of the main reasons for nursing apathy is the basic nursing care for which nurses have not used historically those evidence upon which to base their practice. Critiqued by many publications and authors one of the common barriers to implementation has been the lack of easy and quick access to evidence based information. However, I do not agree with this opinion as the political apathy is the result of nurses not updating and adapting their practices to which they are committed. A nurse must abide by the 'best practice' followed in the hospital and for implementing those practices; nurses must take help from nursing organisations affiliated...

Nursing Theories

...Nursing Theories Nursing Theories How might the concepts we are discussing related to theory and management be applied in community settings, including Third World countries? Nursing theories have profound effects on nursing practice. For instance, the theories offer a structure to support and express nursing practice, and assist in offering solutions to practice problems (McEwen & Wills, 2014). An example of a middle-range theory that has been applied to nursing leadership is Jean Watson’s theory of human caring. The theory offers an ethical structure for nursing management, organizational effectiveness and quality management. According to Watson (2008), the theory of human caring offers a structure that nurse leaders can employ...

...Nursing Theories s Introduction HIV infection is deemed as one of the most dangerous infections in the world. 66% of the HIV infected women in the U.S. are African American (Gaiter et al, 2013). Nurses, as primary health care givers are responsible for looking after the physical and the mental well being of each patient including HIV patients. A nurses’ role in taking of such patients is an essential component of comprehensive patient care. Keeping the target population in mind the nurses need to provide care through environment, address the patient’s emotional needs and build a stable nurse-patient bond. This can be achieved by following and applying a theory for each time of intended care i.e. Nightingales Environment theory to care...
